'Banned' PlayStation Plus Game Unavailable for Some Subscribers

As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has traversed countless galaxies, fought countless beasts, and wrestled countless WWE superstars, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment over the regional disparity in this month’s PlayStation Plus lineup. It’s like being promised a juicy steak dinner, only to find out that the restaurant forgot your order and gave you a plate of sushi instead – not bad, just not what I signed up for!

It appears that certain PlayStation Plus subscribers have been unable to access one of the free games offered in October, specifically “Dead Space.” For the entire month of October, PS Plus subscribers on both PS4 and PS5 platforms have had the opportunity to download three games for free: “Dead Space,” “Doki Doki Literature Club Plus,” and “WWE 2K24.” These games are available regardless of the subscription tier. The offer is accessible through PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium memberships. Unfortunately, some subscribers won’t be able to obtain “Dead Space” as part of this month’s free games.

Despite the ongoing popularity of games like “Doki Doki Literature Club Plus” and the “WWE 2K” series, this month’s standout PS Plus game seems undeniably to be “Dead Space”. However, it’s important to note that “Dead Space” contains quite graphic, violent content with some extremely detailed dismemberment scenes. This isn’t generally an issue in the United States or other regions where such content is accepted. Yet, in Japan, where violent content can still raise concerns, this might be a point of contention.

It’s worth noting that the remake of Dead Space wasn’t launched in Japan because of its graphic nature, which led to PS Plus subscribers on both PS4 and PS5 in Japan not getting Dead Space as part of their October lineup. Instead, they received Utawarerumono: Lullaby to the Fallen, a game that is less action-packed compared to Dead Space.

On previous occasions, specific regions such as Japan have been offered different PS Plus deals due to various problems, and this time is no exception. When this happens, the affected region often gets a less appealing game, which seems to be the case here. What makes this situation more frustrating is that the substitute game, Utawarerumono: Lullaby to the Fallen, is exclusive to PS4, whereas the original game was not.
