Barb Wire – 4K UHD

As a child of the ’90s who grew up with Baywatch and Playboy gracing our television screens, I must admit that Barb Wire was a cinematic experience I eagerly anticipated. The tantalizing trailer promised a blend of action, drama, and the undeniable charm of Pamela Anderson. However, my expectations were dashed as soon as the movie started – it felt like watching an extended music video with a thinly veiled narrative.

During the peak of Pamela Anderson’s fame from Baywatch, she was chosen to play the lead role in Barb Wire, a character created from Chris Warner’s graphic novel. Anderson was perfectly suited for the role of the firm-bodied, tough-talking blonde bombshell who famously declared “Don’t call me honey!” as her character’s catchphrase, dismissing any man who dared to address her that way.

The synopsis calls Barb Wire the sexiest, toughest woman in Steel Harbor, a city marked by chaos and crime, providing a home for a new kind of mercenary. If you’ve got a problem, Barb Wire is the solution. She’ll use any weapon – including her body – to take what she wants, crossing the line for no man, until the day Axel Hood hits town. He’s on a mission and Barb is the only one who can get him out alive. Will Barb help the man who once betrayed her? There’s only one thing you can be sure of… she can get anything you want, for a price.

Pamela Anderson’s role in the movie sparked childhood dreams and desires among many adults too, but unfortunately, the overall outcome was disappointing. Even though she looked amazing in her leather, PVC, and high-heeled outfits, it seemed absurd to see her performing action scenes while dressed like that. Most viewers felt the same way as the film managed to earn only $3.7 million globally.

Film director David Hogan, with a rich history in creating music videos featuring artists like Prince, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Kylie, Sheryl Crow, brought a polished, music video-esque vibe to the movie Barb Wire. The opening sequence encapsulates this feel, as Pamela Anderson dances seductively in a nightclub while getting doused with water, causing her dress to reveal ample cleavage – a scene inspired by a dream and, let’s be honest, the fantasy of many 13-year-old boys at the time. The studio found this idea intriguing due to its potential for more explicit content in the film. The behind-the-scenes footage from this scene is included in the 4K UHD’s claimed ‘sexually charged outtakes’. Unfortunately, the prior year had witnessed a leak of Anderson’s controversial sex tape, making the suggestive scenes in Barb Wire seem relatively modest compared to what had already been exposed.

The movie “Barb Wire,” released during Anderson’s peak popularity, heavily capitalized on her physical appearance, but as a superhero film, it was often criticized for its weak narrative and excessive focus on her physique in the costumes (or lack thereof). Additionally, setting the movie in a 2017 post-apocalyptic cityscape just 20 years after its release would undoubtedly make it feel outdated quite quickly.

Released now on 4k UHD the bonus features include:

  • New 4K HDR restoration from the original negative with Dolby Vision by Turbine
    New 5.1 and 2.0 mix
  • New interviews with producer Todd Moyer (18 mins), costume designer Rosanna Norton (18 mins) and visual effects supervisor Chris Brown (16 mins)
  • Sexy Outtakes (9 mins)
  • Making-of (15 mins)
  •  Promo featurette (6 mins)
  •  Trailers

Among the interviews, the producer’s insights are particularly noteworthy. Unfortunately, Anderson and director Hogan, who swiftly went back to music videos, didn’t provide any input. It would have been great if they had, as bonus features on re-released films often delve into the production background. Barb Wire, with its unique narrative, seems a perfect fit for such an exploration. However, it appears that this might be more appealing to dedicated fans of Pamela Anderson, given her shift in focus away from her iconic beach blonde persona. Barb Wire is one of those superhero films that didn’t leave a lasting impression initially but remains intriguing enough to warrant a watch, mostly out of curiosity.
