As a lifelong fan of Barbarella, I can confidently say that this upcoming comic series is shaping up to be a thrilling ride! Blake Northcott‘s approach to honor the original while adding a modern twist sounds like a perfect blend for today’s readers. The synergy between the comic and movie is intriguing, especially with Sydney Sweeney portraying Barbarella in both mediums. I can picture her as the space siren just as easily as I can imagine Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool or Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man!

It’s an exciting time for fans of Barbarella, as she makes a comeback in both the big screen and comic books! The iconic sci-fi heroine is being brought to life by ‘Euphoria’ star Sydney Sweeney on the big screen, and Dynamite Entertainment has announced a new comic book series featuring Barbarella. Although there have been several comics about her in the past, writer Blake Northcott aims to pay homage to Barbarella’s history while paving a fresh path for her future. In anticipation of the upcoming ‘Barbarella’ series, we had an intriguing conversation with its new writer to learn more details.

In an exclusive chat, Blake Northcott shared insights about Dynamite Comics’ upcoming “Barbarella” series. She explained her compelling pitch for the project, detailed the development of the storyline, and discussed collaboration with artist Anna Morozova. Northcott also unveiled a fascinating link to Sydney Sweeney’s “Barbarella” film, hinting at potential connections between the movie and comic. Additionally, ComicBook offers a sneak peek at a splash page from “Barbarella” #1 and the cover for “Barbarella” #2.

Plotting Barbarella

In the current scenario, it appears that the Barbarella venture is thriving, with a movie and a reboot of the comic books in the pipeline. If given such an opportunity, what would be the initial thought process when planning the storyline for this project?

As a gamer, my initial idea was: let’s go back to what made the original Jean-Claude Forest comics and Jane Fonda film stand out – the raw sexuality, the humor, the ‘Alice in Wonderland’-like journey with a unique twist. The aim is to recapture that distinctive atmosphere and tone.

In terms of style, I wanted to embrace the futuristic vibe from the late 1960s and early 1970s that was particularly trendy during those years.

Elevator pitch

What was your initial elevator pitch for Barbarella?

On vacation, Barbarella finds herself unexpectedly cast as the lead character on a baffling world of delight, but quickly discerns that she’s the centerpiece of an unintentional production. As events unfold, the situation becomes increasingly chaotic, and she must navigate familiar movie cliches just to stay alive.

I aimed for a playful, self-aware tone, stopping short of blatantly breaking the “fourth wall” like Deadpool, but still incorporating elements of self-reference. I wanted to maintain the campy feel, but give it a more contemporary flavor.

Sydney Sweeney playing Barbarella

What was your first thought and reaction to finding out Sydney Sweeney would be playing Barbarella?

I can’t picture anyone else but Sydney playing this role. She’s proven that she can be dramatic, but I don’t think many people realized how funny she was until Anyone But You was a huge worldwide hit.

She’s the perfect Barbarella, and while I’m writing the series, Sydney is always my template now – just like Ryan Reynolds has become the inspiration for the Deadpool comics in many ways, or how Robert Downey Jr. embodies Iron Man. Once you envision Sydney in that role, you can’t unsee it.

Synergy between Barbarella comic and movie?

Have there been any conversations about creating synergy between the comic and movie?

People often inquire about this, partially due to the fact that both Sydney Sweeney and I are represented by the same agency, Paradigm Talent Agency.

Not sure how much I can say about the screenplay for the film, or what material it could be based on, but there’s definitely a possibility for synergy once we get further downstream.

If the storyline for the Barbarella movie revolves around Barb and Vix battling to escape Planet V, then that’s the solution you’ll get! I have no doubt that the screenwriter who takes on this project will deliver exceptional work.

Collaborating with artist Anna Morozova

How would you describe the experience of working with Anna Morozova, given that the materials she’s shared thus far have been truly impressive? And, in your opinion, what unique creative elements has she contributed to our collaboration?

Ann is extraordinarily talented. Her North American premiere will take place with the comic book series, “Barbarella” #1. I believe she’ll quickly gain widespread recognition and become highly demanded among audiences as her artwork gets showcased more broadly.

As a fellow gamer, let me tell you, collaborating on this project has been an absolute joy! Given that our characters are of European origin and the game seems to have a strong European influence, it felt like destiny bringing us together. It’s been a seamless collaboration, just as if we were playing in the same virtual world.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself unconcerned about the final outcome of my writings, for I am certain that whatever I jot down will be magically transformed into something visually breathtaking and beyond my descriptive abilities by her artistic touch. Her fluid, graceful style is bound to leave everyone in awe.

As we edge ever closer to the grand launch of Barbarella, I find myself reflecting upon my own journey and the wisdom it has imparted. To all our eager readers, let me share a few thoughts:
