Barbie Director Shoots Down Reports of Sequel Development (And We’re Not Happy About It)

As a cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema from black-and-white silent films to today’s visually stunning blockbusters, I must say that the prospect of a Barbie sequel is both intriguing and slightly amusing. The original film was a delightful surprise, with its star-studded cast and thought-provoking narrative.

Reports suggested that a follow-up to the 2023 blockbuster “Barbie,” featuring Margot Robbie as different iterations of Barbie dolls navigating changes in their world, Barbie Land, was in preliminary stages of production, with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach returning as director and co-writer respectively. However, Gerwig has since debunked these rumors. The original movie saw Robbie’s character, “Stereotypical Barbie,” and Ryan Gosling’s Ken venturing into the real world for the first time. As of now, discussions about “Barbie 2” continue, based on ideas presented by Gerwig and Baumbach, although a formal agreement has not been reached yet.

According to a statement from Warner Bros., the information provided by THR in their report about the script for Barbie 2 being co-written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach is incorrect. Both Gerwig and Baumbach’s representatives have also stated that there is no truth to this reporting. However, a source close to the publication claims that if a deal for Barbie 2 is secured, it is possible that Gerwig and Baumbach may collaborate on the script again. Currently, Baumbach is working on post-production for his Netflix movie, which stars Gerwig, Adam Sandler, George Clooney, among others. Meanwhile, Gerwig is gearing up to film an adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.

Besides Robbie and Gosling, the illustrious cast of Barbie featured stars like America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, John Cena, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ariana Greenblatt, Michael Cera, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Dua Lipa, and Helen Mirren. After its release, Barbie caused a stir in the box office, raking in over $1 billion globally. The film’s triumph didn’t stop there; it garnered eight Oscar nominations and took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song with Billie Eilish’s track “What Was I Made for?

As much as I’m bummed out by the current news, it doesn’t take away the possibility that we’ll get a Barbie sequel someday. The plot for Barbie 2 might be under lock and key right now, but with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling potentially returning to their roles, it’s tough not to imagine the story unfolding. If made, the sequel would probably bring back some familiar faces from the first movie while also introducing fresh Barbies and Kens into the Mattel cinematic world.

In the context of Barbie 2’s narrative, it is unclear if characters like Ferrera’s Gloria and Greenblatt’s Sasha, being real-world individuals, would fit. However, Ferrera’s Oscar-worthy portrayal lends a strong case for her character to possibly return in a hypothetical sequel film.

Despite the fact that the release of Barbie 2 is still far off, enthusiasts can look forward to seeing what creative ideas Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach will bring to the following installment of Barbie’s storyline.
