Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy Rescued at Sea After Boat Issues

As a lifestyle expert and someone who values the importance of adventure and exploration, I can only imagine the adrenaline rush and terror Dave Portnoy must have felt when he found himself lost at sea. Having experienced the vastness and unpredictability of nature myself, I have a deep respect for its power and the humility it instills in those who dare to challenge it.

Dave Portnoy found himself stranded without a paddle—literally.

Recently, the founder of Barstool Sports revealed that he had encountered trouble at sea off the Massachusetts coast when his new boat suddenly lost power, leaving him stranded.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on July 15, Dave expressed his concern, saying, “Our boys came close to losing Captain Dave today,” and further explained, “I nearly became the ocean’s loss, dear Mother Ocean.”

Before starting the engine of the new boat, which was 47 years old’s plan to share with his mother, he first ensured that the boat was not stationary by detaching it from the moorings.

With no power or radio, no anchor to cling to, just the relentless, overwhelming winds—the captain was gone, swallowed by the sea.

Dave admitted he was clueless and mainly focused on avoiding collisions. He tried to send out a distress signal by igniting a flare, but regrettably, no response came. However, just when things seemed bleak, a helpful figure emerged to offer assistance.

A young woman passing by in a rowboat, around whom I’m unsure of the exact age or appearance, called out to Captain Dave. I cried for aid, “Captain Dave requires assistance!” he described.

I was on the edge of my seat, heart pounding in my chest, when when I managed to get through to the U.S. Coast Guard on my radio. The anticipation was almost too much as I waited for their arrival to save the beloved podcast host from danger.

“Captain Dave has once again escaped the clutches of the sea,” he remarked. “This is his third time leading a ship, and each time, it has ended in disaster. The ocean can be quite unforgiving, my comrades.”

Sadly, this incident might have deterred him from ever getting back on the boat, as he expressed, “Captain Dave may no longer sail with us.”

After the fact, Dave reflected on the stress of the ordeal.

He shared with NBC10 Boston on July 16 that he wouldn’t use the words “I remained composed,” but rather admitted, “The ocean doesn’t discriminate based on wealth. It can overwhelm and humble you swiftly. Consequently, I was extremely anxious and uncertain about the outcome.”

He’s deeply thankful to the mysterious woman who saved the day by contacting the Coast Guard for him, which makes her his unsung hero of the evening.

“I owe her my life,” Dave added. “Without her I could still be halfway to St. Barts, who knows?”
