Recently, Wonder Woman finds herself in a critical struggle for survival. The latest issue of “Wonder Woman” unveiled a shocking revelation: Wonder Woman is destined to die at the hands of a dagger she once used to discipline the Sovereign. In the upcoming issue #20, the narrative takes an unexpected turn as this very same dagger is implicated in the murder of Ares, Wonder Woman’s arch-nemesis. The prime suspect? None other than Hippolyta, Wonder Woman’s mother. With Hippolyta’s life hanging in the balance, Wonder Woman enlists the aid of Batman to help unravel this mystery. Despite concerns about Batman’s frequent appearances in multiple titles and some fans’ fatigue with Tom King’s “Wonder Woman” series featuring members of the Trinity, issue #20 offers a compelling portrayal of the bond between Wonder Woman and Batman, delving into an event that forever transformed Batman.
In the course of an investigation involving a swiped Zeus’ thunderbolt, Batman sustains injuries and spends hours recuperating under Wonder Woman’s care. Previously within this storyline, Wonder Woman had inquired about Batman’s religious beliefs to which he admitted his faith. This revelation comes as quite a shock; Batman appears more like an agnostic rather than someone who embraces any form of religion. However, the rationale behind Batman’s adherence to religion is straightforward – Wonder Woman is real. This underscores the deep bond they share with one another.
Batman and Wonder Woman Have a Deeper Relationship Than Most People Realize
The iconic duo of Batman and Wonder Woman hail primarily from the classic “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited” animated series, set within the Timmverse universe where Batman holds the throne. Unlike Wonder Woman, she didn’t have her own Timmverse show, but the creators cleverly intertwined their stories, sparking a strong fan interest in their pairing (though we didn’t use that term back then). This dynamic was further emphasized in the DCEU, leading many to speculate about a potential romantic connection. Although their comics haven’t pursued this angle, their bond remains profound due to their shared royal lineage and unique violent tendencies contrasting with their teammates. However, their relationship has had its ups and downs, partly because they often resort to more aggressive methods than their colleagues, which creates a distinction in understanding from Superman.
In the memorable comic series titled “Wonder Woman/Batman: Hiketeia“, Batman pursued a suspect to Wonder Woman, who had sworn an oath to safeguard her. This conflict pitted these unyielding heroes against each other, as they both fought for their convictions. After Wonder Woman killed Maxwell Lord, their relationship became strained. However, over time, it improved – in the words of writer Tom King, they found themselves trapped on a mystical battlefield for centuries without any romantic contact. They even starred in their own miniseries, “The Brave and the Bold: Batman and Wonder Woman“. The bond between Wonder Woman and Batman is unique, and it’s no surprise that someone like Wonder Woman could inspire a man as tough and broken as Batman to find faith.
Batman Sees Wonder Woman for Who She Really Is
In the realm of the DC Multiverse, it appears that atheism might be uncommon due to the existence of deities, whether they’re cosmic beings or extradimensional entities. These powers, even if not traditional gods, possess influence over our world and are often consulted by superheroes. However, Batman is a character known for his skepticism towards divinity. His life story seemingly contradicts the existence of a benevolent deity, yet he remains open to evidence that might challenge his beliefs. Wonder Woman, in particular, could be the compelling argument swaying Batman’s disbelief and convincing him of the divine grace.
The kind of character that could pull off such an act effortlessly would be none other than Wonder Woman. She embodies perfection yet possesses flaws, demonstrating immense power bestowed upon her by higher beings while maintaining a genuine concern for humanity. Her existence serves as a testament to the realism of religious teachings at their most positive. Batman, ever vigilant, was touched by what Wonder Woman revealed to him – the possibility of gods existing – which led him to pray. This aspect of her is truly unique and beautiful, quintessentially embodying the spirit of Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman #20 is out now.
