Batman Beyond: Why We NEED More Now!

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about an old favorite when I hear whispers of Batman’s saga unfolding in the grand scheme of the DC Universe. The latest gossip hints at a comeback of Batman Beyond, a futuristic spin on the classic Batman tale, setting the stage for a thrilling new video game trilogy. Frankly, it’s tantalizing news (it sounds fantastic), but let’s face it – what we truly crave is more Batman Beyond! It’s been years since fans of this corner of the franchise have had fresh content to sink their teeth into, and we’ve been longing for either a revival of the animated series or a much-anticipated debut in DC’s live-action universe. If the game is successful, perhaps that dream will come true next.

The animated series titled “Batman Beyond” or “Batman of the Future” in Europe, which ran for three years starting from 1999, was developed by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, and Alan Burnett. This show presents a future-set adaptation of the iconic character Batman, as original Batman (Bruce Wayne) has retired due to circumstances, paving the way for a new iteration of this hero to emerge.

The Origin of Batman Beyond

Batman Beyond served multiple roles simultaneously. It was essentially a continuation of both Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures, while also debuting a new protagonist. This new character would later become integral to the Justice League Animated Series, where he appeared alongside other heroes, including this updated version of Batman.

The narrative opens with a mature Bruce Wayne, now too old for the dangerous Batsuit. With Batman absent and unable to control Gotham’s criminals, especially the Jokerz gang, chaos ensues in the city. This paves the way for our new protagonist, Terry McGinnis, a troubled high school student who refuses to stand by while the Jokerz wreak havoc on the streets. Consequently, he becomes a target of their wrath.

A person who enjoys comics can likely predict what will transpire next when Terry is thrust into the thick of vigilantism. One event leads to another, and eventually, Terry finds himself in an ideal location to acquire what he requires to carry on the fight – Bruce’s Batsuit. However, what comes next isn’t all rainbows and butterflies, as Bruce has always struggled with relinquishing control, particularly when it comes to parting with his Batsuit, even to someone who may have stolen it. Nevertheless, that scenario unfolds as Terry demonstrates he is the right person for the task.

The Best of Batman Beyond

The animated series “Batman Beyond” offers much for both veteran and novice fans, presenting a fresh perspective on the iconic superhero while still retaining beloved elements. Having Bruce Wayne take up a mentorship role adds depth to the character, and it’s enjoyable to watch him guide someone rather than diving headfirst into action himself. Moreover, the portrayal of a grumpy and grizzled Bruce Wayne in this series is surprisingly charming and amusing.

Regarding Terry McGinnis, he introduces a fresh approach to the Batman persona, given that he’s slimmer and more nimble compared to his former counterpart. His suit compensates for his physical weakness, while Bruce provides assistance in terms of training. As a younger version of the character, Terry grapples with numerous challenges, one of which is maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Terry’s narrative is intertwined with a fresh wave of trauma, a significant part of which he navigates throughout the series using traditional Batman strategies.

In addition to Terry, there are also other fresh faces joining the scene, as new adversaries emerge to challenge this updated Batman. It seems fitting, doesn’t it? Some of these antagonists offer a contemporary twist on established characters, while others like Blight and Shriek are brand new additions to the Batman Beyond universe. Furthermore, there are some greyscale characters thrown into the mix, providing insight into how people can transform into villains and vice versa, adding depth to these action-packed stories.

Batman Beyond in the Comics & Present

The television series “Batman Beyond” ended after 52 episodes, but Terry McGinnis’ story continued in the Justice League Animated series and later in comic books. His solo comic book journey began in 1999 with a six-issue miniseries, followed by a longer-running series. Regrettably, this series only ran for a couple of years. Since then, Terry’s comic adventures have been sporadic, but they didn’t always align with the Batman Beyond character as initially presented in the animated series. For instance, subsequent stories featuring this character omitted his best friend, who had taken on a “woman-in-the-chair” role, which felt disjointed at best.

Today finds us in anticipation, faithful followers of Terry McGinnis, anxiously hoping for word on his return. Despite some fans’ displeasure over Batman Beyond possibly taking center stage in the upcoming video game trilogy, we’re reassured to learn it hasn’t been overlooked. However, our hopes for a revival of the animated series continue unabated, and we will no longer keep quiet about this desire.

Batman Beyond is available to stream on MAX.
