As a gamer who has seen countless superhero films throughout my gaming-fueled nights, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when I think about Tim Burton‘s Batman. The 1989 masterpiece was a game changer that introduced a darker side to the world of superheroes, and its impact is still being felt today.
Filmmaker Tim Burton revolutionized the world of superhero movies with “Batman” in 1989, offering a far more brooding and gothic portrayal compared to the “Superman” films that had come before. This darker approach has left an indelible mark on the genre, persisting even today. However, Burton’s attempts to develop “Superman Lives” in the ’90s with Nicolas Cage did not result in a completed project. Despite his significant influence on superheroes, Burton has expressed little interest in returning to the genre. Moreover, given that he hinted at retiring from studio productions, it seems unlikely that his unique storytelling style would align well with upcoming Marvel or DC projects.
In response to Variety’s question about revisiting a superhero franchise, Burton stated, “Currently, I wouldn’t consider it. However, I always approach things from unique perspectives, so I never rule out anything completely. But for now, it’s not something that appeals to me.”
Recently, Tim Burton’s last directorial venture was “Dumbo” in 2019, and he’s voiced his displeasure about managing studio constraints since then. It’s worth noting that “The Flash,” released the previous year, brought Michael Keaton back as Batman from Burton’s films, and subtly referenced Cage’s encounter with Superman too. Also intriguing is the fact that Sam Raimi, who directed “Spider-Man,” re-entered the Marvel universe in 2022 with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Interestingly, he had been absent from the superhero genre for a span of 15 years.
It appears that with Keaton resuming his role as Batman, Burton working with Keaton on “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, and Raimi getting back into superhero films after creating iconic stories, it’s quite possible that Burton might revisit the genre. However, he seems to hold a different perspective on this matter.
Despite being a significant movie within the superhero genre, Tim Burton mused that he wasn’t required to think about the idea of a “series” or “franchise” while producing Batman.
“At the time, the term ‘franchise’ wasn’t around yet, so the Batman movie felt somewhat innovative. This was because it differed from the typical expectations of a superhero film, and as a result, we didn’t encounter the usual studio feedback. Being based in England, we were even more insulated from such concerns. Instead, we could concentrate on creating the film without worrying too much about the industry trends that are now considered before production begins.”
Burton’s latest film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is set to hit theaters on September 6th.
