Batman Doesn’t Need a Movie to Be a Major Character in the New DCU

As a die-hard Batman fan with decades of comics, films, and animated series under my belt, I must say Friday was a rollercoaster of emotions. The delay of “The Batman – Part II” to 2027 and the apparent pause on “The Brave and the Bold” has left me somewhat disheartened. But, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining!

It was disappointing news for Batman enthusiasts on Friday, as it seems there could be some unexpected twists from the Caped Crusader. We’ve found out that “The Batman – Part II,” initially scheduled for October 2026, has been postponed a whole year to October 2027. Additionally, development of the DCU’s Batman movie, “The Brave and the Bold,” appears to have halted completely. However, with the DC Universe storyline gathering momentum, there are numerous opportunities for Batman to show up – and maybe even play a pivotal role before starring in his own film once more.

On Friday, it was announced that the release of the sequel to “The Batman” featuring Robert Pattinson has been pushed back once more, now slated for October 1, 2027. This news undeniably dampens spirits, particularly among admirers of this specific portrayal of the Dark Knight. Interestingly, DC Studios is positioning it as an “Elseworlds” tale that deviates from the usual continuity. However, with the vast potential the DCU holds for Batman, there’s a lot more to look forward to. In fact, we’ve already caught a glimpse of the DCU’s Batman in a silent role in “Creature Commandos“.

On Friday, there was widespread concern among online fans when director Andy Muschietti mentioned during a Spanish interview that the DCU’s Batman film, titled “The Brave and the Bold,” has been delayed slightly. He further stated, “I might work on another project before that.” It should be noted that Muschietti is currently contracted to direct “The Brave and the Bold,” which is still in the early stages of development, without a screenwriter or cast being confirmed yet.

The absence of a release date for The Brave and the Bold won’t alter our current timeline. Instead, the DC Universe will kick off its big screen journey on July 11, 2025 with Superman. With an impressive ensemble of characters in the film’s trailer, it’s plausible that Batman might join the fray as well. However, if he doesn’t, there are still three upcoming films where we could potentially see him, or alternatively, he may show up in any one of the numerous TV series currently being developed.

As a film enthusiast, I’m intrigued by the silence from DC Studios regarding the recent Batman buzz, but there are clear signs pointing towards their direction. James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs, has been vocal about skipping origin stories for Superman and Batman, acknowledging that fans have seen these tales unfold on screen numerous times. This suggests a creative approach to reintroduce these iconic characters in unique ways, perhaps using them as recurring elements in other films and shows, allowing us to become more acquainted with “the world’s greatest detective” before he steals the limelight.

Where in the DCU is Batman?

If Batman is introduced earlier than expected and DC aims to keep us guessing, anything could happen. But if we’re considering the most probable scenarios, it seems likely that we’ll encounter him in fall 2026. This is when a solo movie for Clayface, produced by Matt Reeves (director of The Batman), is set to debut. Clayface is one of Batman’s adversaries, and while DC plans to give him his own film, it seems logical to hint at Batman’s presence in it. It’s difficult to envision DC dragging out that hint for too long – particularly after observing the overall flop of Sony’s Spider-Man-associated franchise.

Subsequently, we have “The Authority” on deck, currently under production without a specified release date. This film revolves around a highly capable team that will stop at nothing to attain their objectives, making it crucial to juxtapose them with other DC characters such as Superman and Batman. It’s possible that we might witness the Dark Knight in some capacity within this storyline.

On TV, we still have a few episodes left of the series “Creature Commandos”, which will then be followed by “Peacemaker” Season 2 in August. Following that, the only show currently being produced is “Lanterns”, but its release date has not been announced yet. Once it debuts, “Lanterns” will have a bit of an advantage due to introducing Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion) and the Green Lantern Corps, which were previously featured in Superman. This could potentially mean that Batman might also make an appearance. After that, we’ll just have to wait and see what else is coming up on our screens.

What’s Holding up The Batman — Part II?

The scheduling of Robert Pattinson’s Batman might have been rescheduled due to a mix of tactical and practical considerations, as suggested by Deadline’s report. Factors such as the track record of previous DC Comics adaptations, an already crowded schedule with numerous blockbuster movies, and Pattinson’s commitment to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in early 2025 could be contributing factors.

Meanwhile, there might be adjustments in Reeves’ solo Batman project following the triumph of “The Penguin”. Initially intended as a limited series, discussions about a second season or a spinoff have been ongoing since its conclusion. It seems the studio is considering broadening Gotham’s scope before reintroducing the bat.

Fans of Batman can’t predict where they’ll catch their favorite character next, but this uncertainty adds to the thrill as part of the DCU’s launch. The franchise is off to a robust beginning with the series “Creature Commandos,” and anticipation for the July release of the “Superman” film is already significant. In the interim, previous Batman films are currently available for streaming on Max.
