Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb have stopped hiding their upcoming project, “Batman Hush 2“. Over two decades since Lee and Loeb’s original 12-part “Batman Hush” revealed the enigma surrounding Bruce Wayne’s arch-nemesis Tommy Elliot, this masked antagonist returns in “H2SH”: a six-issue sequel set to bring significant changes to the Dark Knight’s current state, following Chip Zdarsky’s writing of “Batman”, which wrapped up with issue #157 in February.
Initially unveiled at New York Comic Con in October, and hinted in a three-page prologue within Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s “Justice League Unlimited” #1 in November, the storyline “H2SH,” penned by Loeb and illustrated by Lee (inks by Scott Williams, colors by Alex Sinclair), commences in “Batman” #158 on March 26, continuing through “Batman” #163 in August.
The storyline “H2SH,” which was first teased at New York Comic Con in October and later hinted in a three-page introduction in the comic “Justice League Unlimited” #1 in November, will start in the 158th issue of “Batman” on March 26 and run until August in issues 163. It is written by Loeb, illustrated by Lee, with inks by Scott Williams, colors by Alex Sinclair.
For some time now, there have been discussions about revisiting “Hush” for a sequel. However, due to multiple factors, the timing never seemed suitable, according to DC publisher Lee in the latest “DC Nation Spotlight“. With our ongoing “All In” initiative, which introduced the “Absolute” line while maintaining excitement in the main series, this return to “Hush” presents itself as the ideal moment.
When Jim is prepared to return, I will be ready as well.
Lee commented, “We struggled with finding a way to rekindle the initial excitement while still offering something fresh. Remarkably, Jeph came up with a story that feels like a completely different perspective compared to what he created two decades ago. This new narrative sets a fresh baseline for Batman, introducing new adversaries, new appearances, and new settings.
Additionally, you’ll find some familiar antagonists too, among them those who appeared in the blockbuster “Hush” comic (where Batman clashed with characters like the Riddler, Clayface, and even a Superman controlled by Poison Ivy). Apart from Hush, DC Comics has hinted at the Joker in the initial issue (named “The Pawn”), and based on the cover for Batman #159, we can expect to see Jason Todd, also known as Red Hood.
20 years later, Jim calls me up, proposing a revisit of our old characters. His suggestion: we should elevate what we started before, but this time aim higher. That’s the task at hand. I have no doubt in my mind that artists like Jim, Scott, and Alex have risen to the occasion and surpassed their own previous achievements.
Despite reuniting for their long-awaited sequel after 23 years apart, Lee emphasizes that while the characters resemble their classic selves, they’ve updated certain aspects to blend the past with the present. In other words, they’re using fresh camera techniques, unique perspectives, and modern color palettes. Lee explains that this push for innovation stems from the high expectations they face and serves as a driving force to produce their finest creative work yet.
Over the past two decades, Hush, the main antagonist from Batman: Hush, has been featured prominently in various works such as A.J. Lieberman’s Batman: Gotham Knights, Paul Dini’s Batman: Heart of Hush, the live-action Batwoman series, and the Batman: Arkham video games. Since the revelation of his identity is no longer a mystery, the new storyline H2SH focuses more on revenge.
As Joe Loeb explains, “Much of our initial work was centered around ‘Who is Hush? What are his intentions? What’s happening?’ We’ve now laid all that groundwork, so in many ways, this is a story of retribution. He has learned so much, and one of the fascinating aspects of the character is that he’s a master manipulator.
Loeb goes on to say, “He finds enjoyment in the game. It’s reminiscent of shifting pieces on a chessboard. You don’t desire to keep playing the same game. Instead, you wish to steer it towards uncharted territory.”
The adventure starts in Batman #158, hitting shelves on March 26 from DC Comics.
