As a lifelong fan of Batman and all things superhero, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic delight when I see Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman posing together as Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy. It’s been nearly 30 years since they graced our screens in the infamous Batman & Robin, and it’s heartwarming to see these iconic villains reunited.
Call for a pause! Over two decades since their initial encounter with George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell in the 1997 film “Batman & Robin”, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman have reunited. The actors, who played the frosty Mr. Freeze and the venomous Poison Ivy opposite the late Robert Swenson’s Bane, are seen posing together in a photo shared on Instagram. “Freeze and Ivy, back together,” Schwarzenegger wrote as a caption, finishing with a chilling message: “Beware, Batman.
The viral picture was taken several months following the incident where Schwarzenegger and DeVito, who portrayed the Penguin in the 1992 movie “Batman Returns”, playfully teased Michael Keaton, a previous Batman, during their joint appearance at the 2024 Oscars.
1997 saw Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman embody the villainous duo from DC Comics in a movie filled with witty puns, where Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl teamed up with both the Dark Knight and Robin. Despite its poor box office performance and being labeled as the worst Batman film, Schwarzenegger spoke highly of his role as the villain when reminiscing in a 2019 GQ video. He explained that he was initially drawn to work with director Joel Schumacher due to his unique directing style. Schwarzenegger admired Schumacher’s approach, which allowed actors to express themselves freely and do their own takes, rather than being controlled or heavily directed. This creative freedom, as Schumacher often said, “Let’s do one for the artist,” was what appealed to Schwarzenegger most.
Arnold Schwarzenegger commended Clooney’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader, noting that he found the then-rising star in the TV series ER to be exceptional and a pleasure to collaborate with. He went on to say that Clooney was kind, considerate, and easy to work alongside. However, Arnold admitted that his one grievance was wearing the LED-illuminated Mr. Freeze suit, which required five hours of makeup application every day and fitting multiple outfits. This necessitated a great deal of self-control and effort, he added.
Back in 2022, when I sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight, I couldn’t help but sing praises for the director. You know that cheesy movie, Batman & Robin? Well, let me tell you, it was a blast to be a part of!
