The upcoming “Year One”-style story is being crafted by a team known for their work in such narratives – Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen. This creative duo was behind the 2022 miniseries “Robin and Batman,” offering fresh insights into Batman’s early years and Dick Grayson’s initial career. Their latest project focuses on the most debated Robin – Jason Todd. DC has officially announced a three-issue miniseries titled “Robin and Batman: Jason Todd” based on this upcoming storyline.

Batman has taken on a new apprentice, Jason Todd. Known for being headstrong, impetuous, and reckless, with a questionable past, Batman believes he can transform him into Gotham’s future guardian. However, the question remains whether Batman can help Jason conquer his inner demons. As if things weren’t already challenging, a new enigmatic villain, draped in white fabric and secrets, targets Jason. This leads Batman to recognize that he has what it takes to temper Jason’s rage and turmoil.

By now, most people are familiar with the tale of Jason Todd, originally the disliked Robin who was decided to be killed off in “Death in the Family”. However, after his resurrection in the 2005-2006 storyline “Under the Red Hood”, he gained more popularity and has since transformed into an antihero, appearing in numerous series. Given that Jason Todd’s background is filled with retcons, and his character lacks a true canonical origin, this upcoming narrative is eagerly anticipated as it promises to fill a longstanding gap in his history.

In 1983, Jason Todd made his debut in Batman #357. Prior to this, Dick Grayson had departed from Batman and was part of the main cast in the highly-acclaimed DC comic, New Teen Titans. With Grayson gone, Batman felt a void, and so DC introduced a new Robin. Upon examining Jason’s early days, it’s evident that many aspects of Dick Grayson were transferred onto Jason Todd. For instance, in his pre-Crisis origin, Todd’s parents were acrobats, similar to the Flying Graysons, and they were introduced to Bruce Wayne by none other than Dick. The circus they worked for, Sloan Circus, was being blackmailed by Killer Croc, and the Todds enlisted Robin’s help in finding the blackmailer. Tragically, they lost their lives, leaving their son an orphan. Bruce Wayne subsequently took Jason under his wing as a ward.

Essentially, Jason’s backstory is quite similar to Dick Grayson’s origin in many aspects. A blackmailing situation involving a circus results in the deaths of acrobats, and their young son is subsequently adopted by Bruce Wayne and Alfred. During his early days as Robin, Jason essentially played the same role as Dick did before him. In Alan Moore’s classic story “For the Man Who Has Everything” from Superman Annual #11, Wonder Woman even jokes about Jason being just like Dick. The differences between these characters were minimal at best, and this lack of distinctiveness may be one reason why fans never warmed up to him. In essence, he was seen as a duplicate of Dick Grayson.

Following the “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Jason received a revamped backstory, including his classic act of stealing the Batmobile’s wheels, and he became known for his quick-tempered and talkative Robin persona. Since then, DC has undergone multiple reboots, resulting in a steady accumulation of details in Jason’s background – such as Morrison portraying Todd as a redhead that Batman compelled to dye his hair, or Tom Taylor depicting him as a fan of nu-metal music in a “Nightwing Annual” – to the point where many fans struggle to grasp what Jason was like as Robin beyond being a violent and edgy sidekick.

Perhaps a series like “Robin and Batman: Jason Todd” could offer him the respect he’s due.

It’s time for DC Comics to reinvigorate the character of Jason Todd, and one potential way could be by showcasing a younger Jason as Robin alongside Batman. Known for being less popular among fans compared to Dick Grayson, Jason has had a rough deal in terms of portrayal, often being used as a replacement for the original Robin. However, it’s important to remember that any character can shine given the right creative minds, and in this case, Lemire and Nguyen are exactly that. They have the potential to not only satisfy existing Jason Todd fans but also win over new readers who may not have taken the character seriously before.
