The teams developing the next Battlefield games have shared some insights about the anticipated multiplayer shooter’s class system. In a detailed Reddit post, they explained that this new class system is designed as a “network of interwoven mechanisms and foundational elements” which define your function in the battlefield while providing flexibility to tailor how you perform that role.

View Urgent ForecastIn the upcoming “Battlefield” game, customization will play a significant role in shaping how classes operate. Though each class will still be able to create unique weapon loadouts and utilize class-specific devices, it’s important to mention that traditional weapon restrictions for classes are being eliminated. As a result, a player using the Medic class no longer has to engage directly in combat and support their team, but could opt to stay at the backlines and use a sniper rifle instead, which might render their medic abilities less effective.
In the upcoming Battlefield game, to subtly guide players in selecting appropriate weapons, they’ll introduce the idea of Signature Weapons. Each class will have its unique Signature Weapon that offers additional advantages. For instance, a Recon player using a sniper rifle could hold their breath for longer periods, allowing them to take precise long-range shots, unlike other classes might be able to do.
In the next few weeks, the developers plan to test the newly introduced class features in Battlefield Labs, and they’ll be eager to hear player feedback during this period.
As a dedicated Battlefield gamer, I’ve got to say I’m not exactly thrilled about the new take on the classic class system. The comments section is filled with gamers calling it a “first big L,” which is gaming slang for a disappointing move. Many of us are asking for more limited weapon choices, reminiscing about Battlefield 4’s system where certain classes had signature weapons that others couldn’t use, but there were also plenty of general weapons available to all.
In this new system, developers of Battlefield appear to be subtly guiding players towards making wise decisions about their weapon loadouts based on class identity and teamwork, without completely restricting them from making their own choices. The Signature Weapon system encourages players to use specific types of weapons with certain classes, while minimizing penalties for off-class weapon selections that might be seen as unconventional.
The Battlefield team is about to start a new trial run for their game, primarily focusing on improving server performance and ensuring stability. Over the coming weekend, an increasing number of players are expected to participate in this trial run at Battlefield Labs. During this phase, only a few maps and game modes will be accessible for play.
The upcoming “Battlefield” title hasn’t been assigned a definite launch date as of now, but Electronic Arts (EA) has hinted at releasing the multiplayer shooter game towards the end of this year.
