The uncertainty surrounding the future of the Bayonetta series looms as we enter the Nintendo Switch 2 era. For over a decade, the franchise has consistently appeared on Nintendo systems. However, the departure of Bayonetta’s creator, Hideki Kamiya, from PlatinumGames in 2023, leaves us wondering if the series will persist without him. Previously at the studio, it appears that Kamiya was keen to continue the series, and had ideas for Bayonetta 4, which would have expanded upon the ending of Bayonetta 3. In a recent video on this YouTube channel (via Nintendo Everything), Kamiya has hinted at some of these plans and how they would have evolved the series further.
In his own words, Kamiya stated, “People frequently say, ‘He aimed to conclude the Bayonetta series with Bayonetta 3.’ However, this statement is inaccurate. What I actually intended was to establish a concluding point for the trilogy. As far as I was concerned, that stopping point marked the beginning of a new storyline. I had envisioned continuing the series from this new chapter and potentially creating another trilogy leading into yet another chapter. That was my plan.”
When embarking on this new chapter, Kamiya didn’t limit his thoughts to the narrative alone. Of course, the story would be different, but he also considered the game system. He had been gradually refining it from Bayonetta 1 to Bayonetta 2 to Bayonetta 3. For the new chapter, he envisioned a complete overhaul – a fresh start for both the story and game design. Therefore, it was never his intention to conclude the series with Bayonetta 3.
As a gamer, I’m sharing my thoughts on Singularity, the villain from Bayonetta 3. The director pointed out that while some players felt her storyline could’ve been more detailed, it actually ties back to the lore of the first game in the series, particularly the multiverse concept. He mentioned he’s keen on delving deeper into this theme and hopefully gets another opportunity to expand upon it for all fans. Whether this means revisiting the multiverse in a future Bayonetta game or exploring it in an entirely new title, only time will tell.
Contrary to popular belief, Bayonetta 3 was not the last game in the series. After its launch on Nintendo Switch in 2022, another installment named Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon followed in 2023. Creator Kamiya expressed his wish for this spin-off to grow into a separate series, with director Abebe Tinari continuing along with him. Kamiya himself didn’t want it to end with just one story. Unfortunately, both Kamiya and Tinari have left their respective developers – Kamiya moving on to work on the Okami sequel at Clovers, while Tinari joined Housemarque for the development of Saros on PS5. To add to that, Kamiya has also voiced his intention to revive Scalebound, which could keep him occupied for quite some time!
The Bayonetta video game series isn’t owned by Nintendo, but they did finance and distribute Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, and Bayonetta Origins. Moreover, Bayonetta has made an appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series, indicating a significant investment in the franchise. With such involvement, it’s intriguing to see where the series goes next. It might be that Nintendo and PlatinumGames could carry on without Kamiya or perhaps release an upgraded Switch 2 version of Bayonetta 3 as a stopgap until he returns. For now, fans can only enjoy the existing trilogy.
