BBC hits back at claims Strictly is “toxic” workplace after new allegations

As a long-time viewer and admirer of Strictly Come Dancing, I have always looked forward to Saturdays for the past few decades, eagerly anticipating the vibrant energy and camaraderie that the show brings to our living rooms. The idea of a “toxic work culture” on this beloved program is truly disheartening.

In reaction to new allegations about a harmful work environment on Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC has released a statement denying the accusations.

Over the weekend, several ex-employees of the long-standing entertainment program expressed concerns about its work environment in The Observer. One of these former staff members claimed that they had been subjected to sexually charged remarks and inappropriate questions concerning their personal lives.

Since 2016, the grievances encompass various incidents. One employee reported seeing “gifted colleagues subjected to harsh treatment.” Another expressed concern over a workplace atmosphere described as “stressful, poisonous, and uneasy.”

As a movie lover and an insider in the TV production industry, I’ve witnessed firsthand the excitement and energy of live TV shows. With their fast-paced environment, they’ve drawn hundreds of us industry professionals who have had nothing but positive experiences. So, when it comes to allegations of a toxic workplace culture or issues with our whistleblowing process, we don’t recognize those claims. Instead, we take pride in the collaborative and dynamic atmosphere that keeps us coming back for more.

Starting from 2022, we publicly unveiled The Pledge, our groundbreaking initiative, across all our productions such as Strictly. This initiative invites anyone on our sets to report any inappropriate conduct confidentially through various means, including contacting Navex Global, an external whistleblowing platform that operates independently from the BBC and BBC Studios.

As a devoted movie buff, I’ve been closely following the unfolding situation surrounding my beloved Saturday night tradition. Lately, we’ve encountered some troubling updates that could potentially escalate into a crisis for this massively popular show. Two of its professional dancers, Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima, have recently departed amidst accusations concerning their conduct.

Last week, Tim Davie, the head of the BBC, expressed his apologies for any negative experiences on Strictly, stating that boundaries must not be overstepped.

He added: “We don’t accept any form of unacceptable conduct. It’s clear that we needed to make improvements in supervising training sessions.”

Earlier this month, it was officially announced that Pernice and Di Prima would not be coming back to the dance program. After nine consecutive seasons, Pernice decided to depart from the show. They both refuted allegations of any harmful conduct such as abuse or threats.

Following numerous reports of an investigation into my actions on “Strictly Come Dancing,” I want to clarify that my passion and competitiveness, which have been evident throughout my 10-year journey on the show, extends to my dance partners as well. I am as eager for their success as they are for their own.

Throughout my dancing journey, I have been deeply committed to helping my partners reach their full potential as dancers. This dedication stems from a place of deep affection and a fierce desire to succeed, not just for myself but also for us as a team. I am grateful for your unwavering love and support that has fueled our progress together.
