Lovers of Motherland, mark your calendars – we have the release date for the eagerly awaited spin-off series, Amandaland! It will be airing soon on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The comedy series headlined by Lucy Punch, Joanna Lumley, and Philippa Dunne is set to make its grand premiere at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, the 5th of February.
The show, entitled “Motherland,” having concluded with its final episode in 2022, will resume, hailing from the creative minds of Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, and Helen Serafinowicz.
Joining the main three characters who are reprising their roles in their homeland, the series will also feature Samuel Anderson (from Gavin & Stacey) playing Mal, Siobhan McSweeney (known for Derry Girls) as Della, Rochenda Sandall (recognized from Line of Duty) as Fi, Ekow Quartey (starring in Trying) as JJ, and Peter Serafinowicz (from The Gentlemen) portraying Johannes.
After her divorce, Amanda finds herself needing to move and settle in South Harlesden, which an estate agent refers to as SoHa, a name that certainly doesn’t suggest the neighborhood near Wormwood Scrubs prison.
Now that Manus and Georgie are attending high school, Amanda finds herself grappling with the challenges of raising teenagers. Issues such as underage drinking, false social media profiles, and environmental concerns (eco anxiety) are modern-day parenting hurdles she must navigate. Even a confident mother like Amanda can’t face these struggles alone.
Amanda’s mother, Felicity (Lumley), is often present and seems to be in a state of denial about her loneliness. Their relationship shows signs of being somewhat unbalanced, with elements of codependency. It’s characterized by indirect compliments and subtle criticisms, particularly regarding her recent move to a new home.
Following a momentary taste of independence, Anne once again finds herself assisting Amanda in navigating the social waters among the parents at their children’s new school. It’s comforting indeed to have Anne by her side.
Initially announcing the spin-off, Horgan expressed his genuine sadness at parting ways with Motherland. The affection for this series and its characters runs deep. Therefore, it was an absolute joy for him to continue the tales of Amanda, Anne, and even Felicity.
Lucy, Philippa, and Joanna are exceptional in their respective roles, and they will be joined by a hilarious and gifted new cast. I can hardly wait to present the upcoming trials of parenthood and the unique bonds that form among parents at the school.
