As a long-time fan of Paru Itagaki’s work, I can confidently say that her unique storytelling and knack for creating intriguing worlds sets her apart from many other manga artists. From the anthropomorphic society of Beastars to the supernatural elements in Ushimitsu Gao, it’s clear that Itagaki is not afraid to push boundaries and explore unconventional themes.

Initially published in 2016, the manga series “Beastars” by Paru Itagaki swiftly garnered attention for its distinctive artistic approach and its intriguing setting. Instead of human characters, this narrative unfolds through anthropomorphic animals inhabiting a society that mirrors our own. The story’s uniqueness lies in its portrayal of carnivores and herbivores grappling with challenges typically faced by young adults as they transition into adulthood. This creative twist transforms everyday struggles into conflicts arising from being born as a carnivore or an herbivore.

The manga series “Beastars” was remarkably popular, boasting over 7.5 million copies sold before its conclusion, and was beautifully animated by Orange. Creator Paru Itagaki has dabbled in various story genres, ranging from an autobiographical manga to a high-energy Santa Claus-themed shonen series. Her upcoming series, “Ushimitsu Gao,” set to debut in Champion Cross, could potentially outdo her previous works in terms of sheer outrageousness.

Ushimitsu Gao Explores a Peculiar Love Triangle

Paru Itagaki’s newest creation revolves around Megumi Sano, a thirty-two-year-old woman with a keen instinct for the supernatural, who is trying to conceive with her husband. One eerie night, she encounters what seems to be a spirit lurking in a corner of their home. Instead of fear, she experiences embarrassment. From then on, this ghost makes nightly appearances and induces a sleep paralysis state in Megumi, reminding her oddly enough of bondage – not in a distressing manner. Classified as a blend of horror and romance, the narrative remains somewhat vague due to the lack of an official English translation at present. The manga can be found on Champion Cross, with serialization commencing on October 16, 2024.

Without a doubt, Paru Itagaki isn’t new to crafting unusual love stories. One of her well-known mini-series, “Drip Drip,” shares a twisted, risqué theme where a young woman experiences nosebleeds upon encountering something she deems filthy, making her romantic life quite challenging. Her most acclaimed work, “Beastars,” delves into numerous intricate relationships as well, with many of the series’ main couples grappling with their identities as predator and prey. Though “Ushimitsu Gao” might seem like her most eccentric serialized story yet, given Paru Itagaki’s track record, she could easily handle a mature drama with such an unconventional twist.
