As a long-time fan of anime and manga, I have to say that Beastars has truly captivated me with its unique blend of drama, suspense, and intriguing characters. The series’ exploration of themes such as identity, morality, and the struggle between prey and predator resonates deeply with my own life experiences.
In the realm of predators and prey, Netflix’s “Beastars” delves into themes of societal bias, identity, and self-acceptance, constructing a captivating and intricate universe within a divided society. Set in a contemporary world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, “Beastars” revolves around the cultural rift between carnivores and herbivores, where consuming meat (obtained from other anthropomorphic animals) is absolutely forbidden.
Beastars was published weekly in Shonen Champion magazine from 2016 to 2020, resulting in a total of 22 volumes. Its anime adaptation by Studio Orange, which received international recognition through Netflix, premiered in 2019 and returned for a second season in early 2021. As the final season is slated to begin on December 5, 2024, let’s discuss what fans can anticipate from the upcoming series following the climactic and emotionally intense conclusion of the previous season.
The following will not include any manga spoilers.
Beastars Season 3 Is the Culmination of the Anime to This Point
As a gamer, I can’t wait for the final season of Beastars! This epic tale will wrap up the incredible journeys of our characters, diving deep into themes like self-identity, pride, family, and the delicate balance between prey and predator. For Legoshi, it’s all about finding acceptance within himself as he nurtures his bond with Haru even more. Louis, on the other hand, will grapple with his role as a former Shishigumi leader and emblem of unity, torn between his past and future. It promises to be an unforgettable ride!
In Season 3, fresh characters will be introduced, among them the current Beastar – a significant figure who bridges carnivores and herbivores. This newcomer could potentially shake up the existing dynamics, particularly for Louis and Juno, who previously competed for the title. The final season is set to deliver a strong and emotional finale, drawing upon the character development, insights, and trials that have been established throughout the series, including significant events from Seasons 1 and 2.
Season 1 Explores Insecurities, Power, and Desire
The narrative of Beastars opens with the chilling event of Tem, a gentle alpaca, being devoured by an unidentified predator, happening late at night within Cherryton Academy, a mixed boarding school housing both carnivores and herbivores. This gruesome incident sparks escalating animosity among the student body, as consuming meat is seen as the gravest offense in their society. In this universe, herbivores are perpetually anxious about their lives, while carnivores face daily struggles to suppress their innate desires.
In the heart of “Beastars”, we find Legoshi, a shy, composed, and gentle gray wolf who became acquainted with Tem, an alpaca they met in the drama club – one of the rare spots at Cherryton Academy where herbivores and carnivores unite and collaborate. As Legoshi’s tale unfolds, he finds himself grappling with a near-fatal encounter involving Haru, a petite dwarf rabbit, which sets off a struggle between his primal urges and self-control. This incident ignites an internal conflict within him as he ponders whether his feelings for Haru stem from his violent instincts or something more profound. Legoshi’s narrative follows his journey of self-discovery and acceptance – learning to embrace both his strengths and weaknesses.
Louis, who appears self-assured with perhaps a touch of arrogance, disguises his inner vulnerabilities stemming from his distressing history as an illegally traded deer in the black market, where carnivores secretly buy prohibited items like meat. In this clandestine realm, he finds an opportunity to assume authority and garner respect through his portrayal of Adler, a renowned character symbolizing coexistence and prosperity. This role serves as a means for him to transcend his past struggles.
As Haru the dwarf rabbit gamer, I often find myself feeling powerless due to my species and size, leading me to seek solace in relationships that may not be the healthiest. My insecurities drive me to act impulsively, using sexual promiscuity as a way to feel equal and gain control over my life. This complicated relationship with my identity adds another layer of tension, especially when it comes to Legoshi. I struggle to navigate these complex emotions while trying to maintain my perceived status in the gaming world.
Beastars Explores Its Characters’ Struggles
The principal characters – Legoshi, Haru, and Louis – grapple with their personal insecurities. Haru and Louis, being herbivores, often feel powerless and exposed living among the dominant carnivores. Yet, they cope differently. Louis masks his suffering with an air of arrogance and a strong exterior facade, whereas Haru employs her sexuality as a means to counterbalance her physical frailty. Legoshi, on the other hand, wrestles with controlling his predatory impulses while striving to protect those he cares for. His struggle revolves around defining power: whether it’s about using one’s strength for protection or causing harm to others.
At the core of “Beastars” lies an examination of predatory urges versus personal ethics. The internal battle that Legoshi faces – whether to kill or protect – is a key aspect. The lines between predator and prey become hazy as characters grapple with their desires, anxieties, and the pressures society imposes on them. Deeper topics such as power, might, morality, and self-development are delved into through these intricate character relationships in “Beastars”.
During Season 1, Legoshi uncovers a hidden, sinister realm called the Black Market, where herbivores illegally sell their body parts to carnivores. As he ventures into this unsettling world, he encounters Gohin, a straight-talking panda who guides him. Simultaneously, the situation intensifies when Haru is abducted by the Shishigumi, a lethal pride of lions and one of the four dominant criminal groups managing the Black Market. Legoshi, aided by Gohin, saves Haru from the Shishigumi’s grasp. However, the fate of the Shishigumi’s leader remains unclear after he is shot by Louis.
Later on, Juno – a gray wolf who attends Cherryton Academy alongside Legoshi – starts to harbor feelings for him. Her affection grows stronger as she becomes more envious of his relationship with Haru. She feels that she and Legoshi would make a better pair because they are both of the same species. It’s also important to note that Haru and Louis have a complex romantic situation. Haru is deeply in love with Louis, but due to his arranged betrothal to another deer by his demanding adoptive father, he cannot fully reciprocate her feelings. These interwoven love triangles bring additional layers of emotional complexity to these characters’ struggles, as they navigate fear and societal expectations in their world.
Season 2 is All About Secrets, Revelations, and Mortality
In Season 2 of Beastars, it’s discovered that Louis has been absent from Cherryton Academy for several months, reappearing as the leader of the Shishigumi – a group of lions operating in the black market. Taking on this role serves as a PR move to gain respect from his pride, but comes with a heavy price tag; he must consume meat. As the story progresses, Haru and Legoshi grow more intimate, and Legoshi eventually expresses his affection for her.
In the care of Gohin, Legoshi uncovers that the amiable, seemingly affectionate brown bear from the drama club named Riz was responsible for Tem’s murder. This discovery reveals a more sinister aspect of Riz’s personality and the harmful consequences of the compulsory medication bears are given to control their growth, which can negatively impact their mental health. Abandoning the medicine, Riz thought it would bring him closer to Tem, but his hallucination drove him to harm his friend instead. Determined to confront Riz, Legoshi undergoes intense training, experiencing a significant moment when he ingests a bug and gains a deep understanding of life’s worth.
The conflict reaches its peak with a dramatic showdown between Legoshi and Riz, first taking place within Cherryton Academy, but later delayed until New Year’s Eve. In the interim, Louis finds himself in a perilous predicament when Ibuki, a Shishigumi lion who cares for him deeply, presents him with an ominous choice: eliminate Ibuki or face elimination yourself. Struggling with this ultimatum, Louis is saved by Free, another member of the Shishigumi, who steps in and terminates Ibuki. Free then warns Louis to steer clear of the Black Market.
Season 2 Has a Fateful Confrontation
In a fierce battle between Legoshi and Riz, it seemed like Legoshi was about to lose until Louis stepped in. Louis offered his foot for Legoshi to eat, which unleashed all of Legoshi’s hidden power. This selfless act, representing sacrifice and trust, enabled Legoshi to stand his ground. As the fight concluded, a haughty Shishigumi named Pina managed to free herself from Riz’s grasp and alerted the police. With no other choice, Riz conceded defeat and surrendered. Both Legoshi and Riz were taken into custody, but Legoshi was freed ahead of schedule. During this period, Louis initiated his healing process following his encounter with the Shishigumi.
In Season 2 of Beastars, we delve into exposing hidden realities and witness the profound changes that ensue when characters face the consequences of keeping secrets or disclosing them. Legoshi’s story is significantly influenced by the concept of disclosure as he unearths a startling revelation about Riz being responsible for Tem’s murder, compelling Legoshi to grapple with his primal urges and ethical standards.
In Louis’s narrative, the weight of confidentiality becomes evident as he takes up the position as Shishigumi’s leader. His past in the Black Market brings out the contrasting aspects of his personality – his thirst for power and recognition clashing with his inherent herbivore tendencies. The relationship between Louis and Ibuki, who is aware of Louis’s secret and eventually gives up his life to secure Louis’s future, serves as a poignant reminder of the dire effects that hidden truths can have on one’s existence.
1) In essence, Riz is an embodiment of the devastating force that lies within hidden truths. On the surface, he appears jovial, but beneath this facade lies a chilling reality: he killed Tem in an uncontrolled burst of predatory anger. Riz’s attempts to justify his actions as an act of friendship reveal his desperate way of dealing with the situation. In contrast, Pina, the bold Dall sheep, plays a significant role in the exploration of secrets throughout the season. Despite appearing self-assured and charming, Pina’s courage is tested when he uncovers Riz’s crime. Pina bravely confronts Riz during a dramatic monologue within a performance, highlighting his bravery in using the truth as a weapon. Unlike other characters who are burdened by their secrets, Pina’s approach to revealing deceptions stands out starkly.
In Season 2 of “Beastars,” Haru and Juno both undergo personal realizations concerning their connections with Legoshi. As Haru spends more time with him, she uncovers his intricate emotional landscape and the intensity of his feelings towards her. On the other hand, as Juno gains a better understanding of Haru, she develops a newfound admiration for her competitor. At its heart, this season delves into the repercussions of concealed facts and the cathartic, yet frequently agonizing, journey of unveiling them.
In the concluding part of the animated series ‘Beastars’, each character’s journey reaches its culmination, delving into themes such as self-discovery, personal growth, and the continuous battle between prey and predator. As these animal characters grapple with their challenges and navigate the intricate web of their society, the show guarantees a poignant and heartfelt finale that will neatly resolve the relationships and conflicts established throughout the earlier seasons.
