As a devoted Beat Saber fan, I must share some insights about the upcoming changes for PlayStation consoles. A decade ago, there was a widespread belief that Virtual Reality (VR) would revolutionize gaming. Today, VR is here and more accessible than ever, yet it hasn’t quite taken off as expected. While there is an audience who appreciate VR games, its adoption has been challenging due to factors such as cost, space requirements, the need for physical involvement, and immersion that might require players to disregard their surroundings.
In the case of PlayStation VR (PSVR), it seems that Sony may have missed a few steps along the way. The initial headset felt like a trial run, using PS3 Move Controllers and appearing somewhat budget-friendly in construction.
Despite the impressive advancements made with the PSVR2, its high launch price of $550 without any included games was a significant drawback, making it pricier than the PS5 itself. This steep cost, coupled with limited first-party support from PlayStation beyond Horizon Call of the Mountain, has left many questioning the device’s value. The fact that many VR games on PSVR2 can be played on cheaper devices further undermines its appeal. Although PSVR2 does offer some unique features, it hasn’t fully justified its existence. Recently, PlayStation has shown only one multi-platform VR game at its State of Play event, which suggests that they may be winding down their VR efforts.
It appears that even some developers are expressing their disappointment as well. The creators of Beat Saber, Beat Games, have decided to discontinue support for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. However, no specific reason was provided by the developer. The game will continue to be available for purchase, and players can still access all their content, but there will be no further updates. In January 2026, multiplayer for Beat Saber on PlayStation consoles will also be removed. Since Beat Saber is a highly popular VR game, this move by the developer stands out. Here’s their official statement below.
Moving forward, we’re planning some major advancements for Beat Saber, which means that as of June 2025, we won’t be releasing any more updates for PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. Our commitment to virtual reality experiences continues to thrive! We can’t wait to explore new horizons and deliver fantastic developments for our Beat Saber community who have been a part of this incredible journey with us for the past 7 years.
What this means for you:
- This update will not impact your ability to keep playing Beat Saber, and you will still have access to content that you previously purchased on the PlayStation platform.
- Beat Saber will still be available for purchase on PS4 and PS5 devices, and you can still play or purchase songs or music packs that were released prior to June 18, 2025. However, no new content will be released on these platforms after that date.
- Additionally, starting on January 21st, 2026, multiplayer will no longer be available in Beat Saber on PS4 and PS5.
- Cross-buy, however, will remain active between the PS4 and PS5 base game.”
