Bedrock Canceled: Fox Scraps Adult Flintstones Sequel Series

As a huge fan of The Flintstones since I was a kid, I’m truly disappointed to hear that the adult reboot of Bedrock is no longer moving forward at Fox. The idea of a modern Stone Age sequel with Pebbles embarking on her own career and Fred on the brink of retirement sounded like an exciting evolution of this classic animated series.

The development of Fox’s rebooted version of “The Flintstones,” an adult sequel to the classic animated series about Bedrock’s modern stone-age family, has come to a halt, according to TVLine. Announced in 2019, this project was slated for production by Warner Bros. Animation (the team behind “Harley Quinn”) and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions (“Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin”). With Banks set to executive produce and voice a grown-up Pebbles Flintstone. In simpler terms, the planned revival of “The Flintstones” at Fox has been canceled.

Two decades after the initial series, “Bedrock” would introduce a 20-something Pebbles Flintstone starting her career with her father Fred, who was nearing retirement. The Stone Age population of Bedrock is predicted to face challenges as they adapt to the emergence of a more advanced Bronze Age, according to the show’s summary.

In 2023, it was revealed that Stephen Root (known for “Barry”), Amy Sedaris (“No Activity”), Joe Lo Truglio (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Nicole Byer (“Velma”), and Manny Jacinto (“Star Wars: The Acolyte”) would lend their voices to the characters Fred, Wilma, Barney Rubble, Betty, and Bamm-Bamm respectively. “Bedrock,” produced by WB Animation and Fox Entertainment, secured a pilot presentation last spring. These companies are behind popular animated sitcoms like “Bless the Harts,” “Duncanville,” “The Great North,” and the renewed show “Universal Basic Guys.”

Lindsay Kerns, with a résumé featuring the WB Animation projects “DC Super Hero Girls” and “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,” served as both the scriptwriter and executive producer.

“Before ‘The Simpsons’ and Springfield became famous, there were the Griffins and Quahog, and the Belchers began selling burgers on Ocean Avenue. But long before all that, there was the Flintstones and Bedrock. Their influence on animation is significant, and we at Fox are excited to modernize this classic for present-day viewers in collaboration with Warner Bros., Elizabeth, and Lindsay,” Michael Thorn expressed in a statement.

There’s some uncertainty as to whether the project was terminated due to Warner Bros. Animation producing a new Flintstones animated series, titled “Meet the Flintstones” by directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, which is an origin story in CG animation.

The spin-off show “Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs” about the dinosaur Dino and young Pebbles and Bam-Bam from “The Flintstones,” aired for 26 episodes on HBO Max between 2021 and 2022. However, after the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery, this series, along with “Aquaman: King of Atlantis,” “Close Enough,” “Infinity Train,” “OK K.O.! – Let’s Be Heroes,” “Tig n’ Seek,” “Uncle Grandpa,” and “Victor and Valentino,” were removed from the streaming service.
