In autumn, “The Hunger Games” will once again grace the silver screen, featuring Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ hit novel titled “Sunrise on the Reaping“. This book and film delve into the past, focusing on Haymitch Abernathy, a young character, and his participation in the 50th Hunger Games, which took place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen stepped in to save her sister. Many fans were excited when the book was published earlier this year, as they discovered that numerous characters from the original “Hunger Games” series have substantial roles in this new narrative. This includes Beetee, a popular character known for his technological prowess, who was portrayed by Jeffrey Wright in the movies.
With “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping” nearing completion, Lionsgate has been gradually disclosing the main cast. On Monday evening, they made their latest revelation, unveiling who will take over the role of Beetee from Wright: Kelvin Harrison Jr.
For those unaware, Harrison is known for his roles in movies such as “Chevalier,” “Cyrano,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” He also portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the series “Genius” and lent his voice to Taka (or young Scar) in “The Lion King: Mufasa.
One intriguing aspect of Harrison portraying a youthful version of Wright’s iconic character lies in their shared acting history. Previously, Wright appeared as the father to Harrison’s character Steve Harmon in the 2018 Netflix movie “Monster”.
Even though fans adore Josh Hutcherson’s portrayal of Beetee in The Hunger Games, it was bound to happen that another actor would take on the role for Sunrise on the Reaping. While Josh can still convincingly play characters younger than his current age, he is now ten years older than when he first played Beetee. The character in Sunrise on the Reaping, however, is significantly younger, approximately a quarter-century so.
The cast of “Sunrise on the Reaping” is gearing up to be quite impressive. Beetee marks the third character from the initial “Hunger Games” movies to have casting updates. Joseph Zada stars as a younger Haymitch Abernathy, following in the footsteps of Woody Harrelson, who portrayed Haymith in the original “Hunger Games” series. Jesse Plemons is set to appear as a youthful Plutarch Heavensbee, a part that was previously played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
According to recent reports, Elle Fanning is rumored to play a young Effie Trinket, though an official announcement has yet to be made. The upcoming film “Sunrise on the Reaping” will feature Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, who will be Haymitch’s love interest, and Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, a fellow tribute from District 12 alongside Haymitch.
For the upcoming film “Sunrise at the Reaping,” there are a few more characters from “The Hunger Games” yet to be cast, including President Coriolanus Snow himself. Many fans have expressed their desire to see Kiefer Sutherland play this role, as it was previously portrayed by his father, Donald Sutherland, on-screen. At the time of “Sunrise at the Reaping,” Kiefer Sutherland would be of the same age as Snow is depicted in the story.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
