The infamous character known for his striped suit and causing trouble in Hollywood isn’t done scaring audiences at movie theaters just yet. Warner Bros. Pictures is pushing forward with plans for a third Beetlejuice film following the massive success of last year’s long-awaited sequel. The studio, enjoying the unexpected box office success of both Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and A Minecraft Movie, has made it clear that reviving the mischievous bio-exorcist is high on their list of priorities. With the 2024 sequel earning an astonishing $451.9 million globally against a budget of just $100 million, the financial incentive is undeniable. However, the question remains: which franchise cast members will return for another spooky escapade?
Mike De Luca, co-chairman/CEO of Warner Bros. Pictures, revealed that work on the third installment isn’t just a pipe dream but is currently in progress. When asked about potential sequels for their recent box office hits, De Luca shared this news with Deadline.
De Luca hinted that soon, probably very shortly, the details of a third film are set to be revealed. This announcement is made in the context of a larger studio initiative aimed at revitalizing iconic franchises, including potential updates for titles such as The Bodyguard, The Matrix, Practical Magic, Gremlins, and The Goonies.
Without a doubt, the leading actor seems quite excited to slip back into his role again. Known for turning Batman into a pop culture sensation as Michael Keaton, he wholeheartedly agreed to another comeback when interviewed by E! News at a recent gathering.
Absolutely, I’d repeat this annually, no doubt about it! said Keaton, emphasizing once more that Beetlejuice is undoubtedly his most cherished work to date.
Instead of extending the franchise, its visionary director, Tim Burton, appears less keen. In interviews last summer, he expressed uncertainty and seemed uncomfortable at the idea of a trilogy. Given his unique artistic touch, it’s clear that his continued involvement would be essential for preserving the distinct gothic charm that characterizes the series.
A key factor for the success of any follow-up is having the original cast members return, such as Keaton with Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. Additionally, fresh talent was brought in to enrich the storyline, including Jenna Ortega portraying Lydia’s defiant daughter, joined by Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and others.
In order for a third Beetlejuice movie to be successful, it wouldn’t suffice to merely rely on Keaton’s excitement alone. The unique blend of the expanded Deetz family interactions and Burton’s signature visual style, which served as a counterbalance for supernatural antics, were crucial elements that contributed to the success of the previous films.
The sequel’s success, both critically and financially (it received a “Fresh Certified” rating from Rotten Tomatoes), suggests that Warner Bros. has unearthed something extraordinary. Given the 36-year gap between releases, fans may not have to wait another few decades for the enchanting dialogue again. It appears there are still many tales left in this fictional world to explore.
