Beetlejuice 3: Producer Teases Possible Sequel With Tim Burton

As a long-time fan of Tim Burton’s whimsical, dark, and enchanting world, I must say that the return of Beetlegeuse has been nothing short of magical. The sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” has not only captured the essence of the original 1988 classic but has also managed to breathe new life into it.

In a creative rephrase: The character Beetlegeuse, played by Michael Keaton, is summoned back by uttering his name three times, but what about Tim Burton? The eagerly anticipated sequel to the film “Beetlejuice,” which initially seemed destined for streaming before dominating the box office for three consecutive weeks, concludes with a hint that Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), Beetlegeuse’s potential ghoul girlfriend, and her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) may not have seen the last of this Spectral Sovereign.

According to “Beetlejuice 2” producer Tommy Harper, who is also an executive producer on the Tim Burton-directed “Wednesday” series, there’s a possibility for another film given Tim’s affection for the title and characters. However, only time will tell what transpires next.

36 years after the release of his 1988 hit, Tim Burton’s sequel has earned over $330 million at the worldwide box office, more than doubling its initial budget of $99 million. This makes it Burton’s largest success since Disney’s live-action Dumbo in 2019, surpassing his earnings from Dark Shadows in 2012 ($245 million), Frankenweenie (stop-motion animated) in 2012 ($81 million), Big Eyes in 2014 ($30 million), and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children in 2016 ($296 million).

Despite the possibility of a third installment named “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“, Burton appeared to nix the idea of a “Beetlejuice 3” following its out-of-competition debut at the 81st Venice Film Festival in August.

The director, who’s 66 years old, stated during a press conference that it took 35 years to complete one project, and for another, he would be over 100 if completed. While medical advancements might make this possible, he doesn’t believe so. However, he expressed enthusiasm about the Addams Family spinoff ‘Wednesday’ he directed and produced for Netflix, marking his first film since 2019. Contrary to speculation, the Beetlejuice sequel is a deeply personal project rather than a money-making venture.

In recent times, Burton expressed that he had grown disenchanted with the film industry. Yet, he found a renewed passion when creating this movie, as it allowed him to express his heartfelt emotions. He admitted to losing sight of himself for a while, but making this film rejuvenated him by allowing him to return to his passions and work alongside beloved collaborators. For Burton, the outcome didn’t matter; he simply enjoyed creating the movie with these talented individuals. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” – featuring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Jenna Ortega – is currently playing exclusively in theaters.
