Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Director Tim Burton on Beetlejuice 3: "I'd Be Over 100" Years Old

As a lifelong fan of Tim Burton’s whimsical and macabre universe, witnessing the return of Beetlejuice after three decades feels like stumbling upon a long-lost relative from the Neitherworld. The anticipation for this sequel has been as unnervingly exciting as a visit to the Museum of Oddities in the heart of Raggedyville.

In a turn of events that has been 36 years in the making, director Tim Burton is reviving the character Beetlejuice, originally introduced in the 1988 film, for another outing titled Beetlejuice 2. This sequel features the return of Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and the addition of Jenna Ortega from ‘Wednesday’, along with Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe. The movie will debut at the 81st Venice Film Festival on Wednesday, effectively putting an end to the anticipation for a Beetlejuice 3, as it sends that wait straight to the eternal waiting room of the Neitherworld.

Burton said during a press conference that the sequel for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” would take 35 years, and since he’d be over 100 by then, it’s theoretically possible with medical advancements, but he doubts it will happen.

1988’s “Beetlejuice,” featuring the deceased Maitlands, portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, hired Keaton’s unsavory ghost to scare away the Deetz family from their house. This film grossed approximately $75 million at the box office, more than five times its production budget. The movie’s success led to a successful stage musical, an animated series that ran for four seasons, and provided Tim Burton with his next significant directing opportunity – the 1989 blockbuster “Batman.”

Burton expressed his affection for the original Beetlejuice, but admitted he’s always been puzzled by its popularity. He considered the movie as a deeply personal project rather than something universally appealing. However, getting to collaborate once more with Michael, Winona, and Catherine, along with fresh talents like Jenna, Monica, Justin, and Willem, made this experience even more meaningful and unique for him. Keaton concurred, suggesting that the new cast might even surpass the original one, although he acknowledged it was impossible to do so.

In a recent statement, Burton referred to the upcoming sequel as a deeply personal endeavor rather than a money-making venture. This new project marks his first sequel since “Batman Returns” in 1992 and his first feature film since the live-action “Dumbo” in 2019. Burton expressed excitement about the success of Netflix’s “Addams Family” spinoff series, “Wednesday,” which he directed, as it has reinvigorated him.

For several years now, I’ve grown weary of the film industry. However, if I was going to pursue a project, I wanted it to come from a place of genuine passion within me. As I had somewhat lost my way, this movie served as a revitalizing force. It was about reconnecting with things and people I cherish. Regardless of the outcome, I simply reveled in creating it alongside these individuals.
