Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ending explained: What does Lydia’s dream mean?

As a long-time fan of Tim Burton’s quirky and imaginative films, I must say that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice did not disappoint! It was a rollercoaster ride filled with humor, suspense, and a dash of the unexpected.

**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice)**

After a long wait of 36 years, the long-anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s beloved film “Beetlejuice” is finally gracing movie theaters, and it’s making quite an impressive debut, coming close to setting new box office records.

The movie has achieved the third-largest opening of the year, trailing only behind Deadpool, Wolverine, and Inside Out 2, and what’s even more noteworthy is that it surpassed nearly every film released in September, with only It (2017) having a better debut weekend.

The movie features quirky director Burton resuming his role as director, and he reunites with the initial actors Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara for this continuation. Our review of this sequel termed it as a lively follow-up with some delightful scenes, earning a 3-star rating in our Beetlejuice Beetlejuice appraisal.

This time around, the storyline is a bit more intricate compared to before. Multiple plot threads are woven together – such as Beetlejuice’s deceased spouse (Monica Bellucci) and Ortega’s character becoming entangled with a risky love interest. Each thread vies for focus, ultimately culminating in a rather chaotic climax where they converge.

If you’ve watched the movie and have questions about the final scenes, keep reading for a detailed explanation of the Beetlejuice ending.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ending explained

The movie unfolds with various storylines presented. Initially, we meet the Deetz family, which includes Lydia’s daughter Astrid, who’s estranged from her mother due to issues related to her late father. They all return to Winter River for the funeral of Charles Deetz, their patriarch, who tragically perished in a shark-related incident.

Accompanying them is Rory, Lydia’s supernatural talk show producer as well as her boyfriend, who surprisingly chooses a funeral as the moment to propose to Lydia.

Lydia has recently started experiencing visions of Beetlejuice. In an unnecessary subplot involving the afterlife, Beetlejuice now finds himself pursued by his vengeful, ghostly spouse Delores (Monica Bellucci). This Delores is being trailed by Wolf Jackson, a B-movie actor who has transitioned into an undead detective.

The situation starts to change drastically when Astrid has an accident on her bicycle, leading her to meet an apparently attractive guy named Jeremy (Arthur Conti). From the get-go, there’s a noticeable spark between them.

It eventually becomes clear that his allure is merely a facade; in truth, he is a spirit (implying that Astrid possesses her mother’s ability to perceive the deceased) who had killed his parents long ago. He manipulates Astrid to help resurrect himself.

He manages to persuade her to whisper a spell that transports them to the realm of the dead, but first, Lydia learns about Jeremy’s genuine character from a neighbor.

In this situation, I find myself with no other choice but to call upon my former rival, Beetlejuice, for assistance. In fact, I’m willing to make a bargain: I’ll offer him marriage as part of the agreement, ensuring his continued presence in our world and sparing Delores from his antics.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ending explained: What does Lydia’s dream mean?

In the hereafter, Astrid is scheduled to step onto the Spiritual Express – an unwelcome prospect as it meant she couldn’t revisit the world of the living – but fortunately, Lydia and Beetlejuice show up just in time. To make things even better, one of the station workers was revealed to be Astrid’s father Richard, providing her with a long-awaited resolution regarding his demise.

Richard assists the group in making their way back to Winter River, whereas Beetlejuice is tasked with escorting Jeremy away – effectively ensuring he’s sent to the afterlife.

However, events are still unfolding. In Winter River, Rory and Lydia’s wedding is imminent, yet Beetlejuice unexpectedly makes an appearance, serving as a reminder for Lydia of the pledge she had made in exchange for his assistance.

Additionally, it’s revealed – not too shockingly, I might add – that he was drawn to Lydia not for her personal qualities, but rather for her wealth and popularity. His presence at the grief camp where they first crossed paths was merely a ploy to take advantage of vulnerable women. In fact, he didn’t hold any genuine beliefs in ghosts!

A confrontation breaks out, and the situation becomes increasingly disorderly as Delares arrives at the church, intent on exacting her vengeance against Beetlejuice. In this instance, Astrid intervenes by summoning a sandworm from beyond the grave, which eagerly consumes both Delares and Rory.

Later, she discloses crucial details to free her mother from a lifelong union with Beetlejuice, as he had broken the guidelines outlined in the Handbook for the Recently Deceased by bringing Lydia into the afterlife. Consequently, his marriage vows are invalid.

Afterward, she sends him back to the realm of the dead, and she welcomes her mother again. It appears that their relationship has improved after their joint experience, and they vow to invest more time in one another from then on.

In the course of events, Delia Deetz, having encountered her deceased husband without a head during a short visit to the afterlife, chooses to return and reconnect with him again.

What does Lydia’s dream mean?

Toward the climax of the movie, despite generally positive outcomes, there’s a final sequence where Lydia encounters a series of distressing nightmares. In one nightmare, she imagines Astrid delivering a monstrous Beetlejuice infant, a creature that had been previously depicted in the film.

It appears as though she might find it difficult to escape the persistent disturbances he causes, even after being spared from marriage. His presence seems destined to linger in her dreams for a while longer.

It might hint at the possibility of another movie, possibly titled “Beetlejuice 3” or something similar. However, let’s refrain from repeating the full title here.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was released in UK cinemas on Friday 6th September.
