Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Stars Reveal the Most Tim Burton-Thing About the Sequel's Set

As a long-time admirer of Tim Burton’s whimsical and enchanting filmography, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard about the upcoming sequel to one of his most iconic films – Beetlejuice! Growing up, Beetlejuice was always a staple in our household, and the prospect of revisiting that world again has been a source of pure joy.

Tim Burton is a highly respected director, renowned for creating unforgettable movies like “Batman”, “Batman Returns”, “Edward Scissorhands”, “Big Fish” and many others. One of his most recognized works is the 1988 hit and Academy Award-winning film, “Beetlejuice”. For quite some time, there have been whispers about a sequel, and now the moment for it has arrived. This week, the world got its first glimpse of “Beetlejuice 2” at the Venice Film Festival, and initial responses to the movie have been overwhelmingly favorable. In a recent interview with ComicBook, some cast members, including Jenna Ortega and Catherine O’Hara, shared an aspect of the film set that truly embodies Burton’s style.

In response to being asked about the most Tim Burton-esque aspect on the set, O’Hara said it was the overall atmosphere. “It all stems from his sketches… the crooked floors and walls, the stunning visuals, the live puppetry and practical effects captured right there on set… He allows us to experience as much of the final product as possible while filming.”

Ortega clarified, “Absolutely, it’s very enlightening.” He went on to say, “When actors talk about dressing up, doing their hair and makeup, and feeling a change in how they move, it’s incredibly insightful. It’s not often that we can ponder or draw inspiration from the setting and events within a scene. So, I believe this experience helped me understand a bit more, which is wonderful.”

O’Hara mentioned that his boss is not only competent but also playful. He creates an atmosphere of excitement by asking questions and inviting opinions, making it feel like “Wow, what’s next?” or “I wonder what he thinks about this?”

Ortega emphasized, “Extremely impromptu.” To which O’Hara concurred, “Absolutely impromptu and imaginative.” He certainly makes you think quickly on your feet.

What Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice About?

In this updated version: “After an unfortunate family event, the Deetz family, spanning three generations, return to Winter River. They find themselves once more disturbed by Beetlejuice. Life for Lydia becomes chaotic when her defiant teenage daughter, Astrid, stumbles upon a peculiar town model in the attic, and unintentionally opens a gateway to the Afterlife. Trouble is brewing in both worlds, so it’s only a matter of time before someone utters Beetlejuice’s name three times, summoning the mischievous spirit back to stir up more havoc with his unique brand of chaos.”

Michael Keaton once told Empire magazine that working on “Beetlejuice” is the most enjoyable experience one could have. He described it as incredibly fun and fantastic. Notably, they’re making the sequel in the same manner as the original film. There’s a fascinating scene in the afterlife waiting room where a woman pulls a cat’s tail to move it using a fishing line – a detail I mention because I find it delightful.

Keaton expressed, “[Burton] and I have discussed it for years without sharing it with anyone. I said, ‘If it ever comes to pass, firstly, we’ve both stated numerous times that we’d do it. If it happens, it must be done as closely as possible to the way we made it the initial time. This involves creating and fabricating things ourselves, rather than inventing or contriving events. It should be authentic, raw, and hands-on work. Truly, it’s been the most enjoyable film project I’ve worked on in a very long while.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is scheduled to debut in theaters on September 6th.
