Instead of the original: Who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory whether it be the assassination of JFK , Chemtrails or the New World Order. Indeed our very own Editor was putting together a programme about the 9/11 attack and interviewed a leading conspiracy theorist about what they believed happened that day. It didn’t go well because when our Editor pointed out many of the discrepancies and holes in their theories one of them replied, ‘Oh I see what you’re doing. You’re in on it as well?’
Everyone seems to enjoy a good conspiracy theory, ranging from the assassination of JFK to Chemtrails or the New World Order. Our editor even created a show discussing the 9/11 attack and invited a prominent conspiracy theorist to share their beliefs. However, the interview didn’t go smoothly as when our editor pointed out inconsistencies in their theories, one responded defensively, “Ah, I see your game now. You’re part of it too?”
And instead of: Perhaps one of the most popular conspiracy theories is the death of famous popstars, singers etc but you don’t have to be brainier than the wall of Kurt Cobain’s house to realize that many are nonsense. So whilst super fans still believe that Elvis is still alive (singer Kirsty MacColl swears there’s a guy works down her chip shop who swears he’s Elvis), ‘Before the End’ countenances the idea that Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors is also still alive.
Among the widely-believed conspiracy theories is the supposed deaths of famous musicians and singers like Kurt Cobain. However, it doesn’t take a genius to see through many of these theories as they often make little sense. For example, although some devoted fans insist that Elvis Presley is still alive (Kirsty MacColl claims she knows someone who swears he works at her chip shop), the series ‘Before the End’ proposes that Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, might also be alive.
In his three-part documentary spanning years of research and interviews with over a thousand individuals connected to Jim Morrison, director and longtime fan Jeff Finn delves into the theory about Morrison’s life, death, and potential afterlife. The first part focuses on speculations surrounding his demise, supported by what some may consider coincidences. Although Finn acknowledges that these coincidences are numerous and hard to explain, he argues that they warrant exploration. This initial segment includes extended conversations with Morrison’s school friends and others who recount his comments about disappearing or staging his own death. However, it should be noted that many of the statements made in this first part might seem far-fetched or absurd, as we all have occasionally expressed outlandish ideas, such as aspiring to be the first man on Mars, creating a robot, or claiming an unusual medical condition like not sweating.
In Part Two, things become more intriguing as we uncover a surprising truth about Morrison’s past, one that seems to have deeply impacted him. We also meet a man named Frank who may not be all he appears. However, this narrative thread sometimes strays into dubious territory with vague and contradictory clues. But it’s Part Three where the story really shines, filled with numerous revelations such as Morrison being expelled from the band, a significant photograph with a reflection in sunglasses, and the enigma of who Frank truly is. Yet, everything remains unexplained, labeled ‘uncanny,’ and leaves us questioning, ‘How do you account for all these coincidences?’ The answer appears to be that they are simply coincidences. Unfortunately, one source who claimed to know what happened on that fateful night adds to the mystery by saying, ‘It’s a secret I’m keeping to myself.’ This implies either something suspicious happened or she’s perpetuating a myth to boost her own relevance in the matter. Ultimately, there’s no clear explanation either way.
To ensure the success of this documentary, it’s crucial that it meticulously trace the events surrounding Morrison’s alleged death from the beginning and work backwards to address some key questions. Why was the coffin sealed? Where did Morrison obtain the drugs on that tragic night? Where is the coroner’s report, and why hasn’t it been analyzed by a local expert? Also, why wasn’t all the evidence, although mostly circumstantial, presented to French authorities? The answers to these questions can be simply uncovered through a DNA test of the body in the coffin located at that Paris cemetery.
In simpler terms, “Before the End,” as described by Jeff Finn, is less about uncovering a specific conspiracy and more about shedding light on the person behind the legend, offering insights into who he is.
