One notable facet of their friendship extends beyond the screen, with Pedro Pascal consistently advocating for Bella Ramsey‘s non-binary identity and being an ally to the entire LGBTQIA+ community off-screen as well.
Ramsey discussed his connection to the series “The Last of Us” and his identity as an LGBTQIA+ individual, and it’s worth noting that HBO’s “The Last of Us” is known for its inclusive representation. In this series, Ellie, played by Ramsey, is a gay character, and there are other characters who identify as gay or bisexual with their own storylines. Players familiar with the video game version of “The Last of Us” will also recognize a transgender character. The fact that Ellie is a canonically queer character was one of the reasons Ramsey became involved in the project.
Ramsey mentioned that he first learned about the world of ‘The Last of Us’ through an article depicting Dina and Ellie’s kiss in the second installment – apparently a groundbreaking moment for lesbian representation in video games. This relationship was instrumental in introducing me to the game. He found it particularly meaningful to portray that connection with Isabela Merced,” Ramsey said. So far, the Ellie-Dina relationship has been central to the TV series adaptation of the game.
Ramsey expressed his admiration for how “Ellie’s queerness” is subtly and artfully integrated within the narrative of the story, saying, “It’s brilliant how deeply and elegantly it’s threaded into the story’s foundation.” Ellie in the show avoids stereotypes and didacticism, which contributes to its widespread appeal among LGBT+ viewers.
Ramsey stated that Pascal is an open-minded supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. He shared, “I discuss such topics with him.
They further explained that “performative allyship doesn’t describe him at all. In fact, advocacy is something he deeply cares about and has been extremely supportive of me – something I’m truly thankful for.
Pedro Pascal Is An LGBTQIA+ Ally
In the conversation with “Them”, it was Pascal who was present alongside Ramsey. He asserted that he advocates for queer rights as it’s ethically wrong to oppress anyone for being true to themselves, and making them feel inferior for having the courage to live honestly. Notably, Pascal has his transgender sister, Lux Pascal, whom he openly supports.
there’s no need for me to hide who I am either.
The Last of Us seasons 1 and 2 are available to watch on HBO.
