In the recent episode, Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, has taken the lead following the heart-wrenching and protracted demise of Joel Miller (played by Pedro Pascal). The lingering impact of this tragic event is palpable among the characters.
Ramsey shared that the scene where Ellie wept over Joel’s jacket was particularly challenging for him because he finds it difficult to cry on camera. He explained that shedding a tear is different from actually crying and it doesn’t come naturally to him. Additionally, he rarely cries in front of others in his everyday life, so only a small number of people have ever seen him cry.
In a crowded set with the monitor and spectators watching the monitors, doing that scene was almost impossible for me, Ramsey explained. This particular scene made me quite anxious, and it was the most challenging one to film. Ramsey added that despite their attempts to recall something sad from their personal life to help them emote, this method didn’t seem effective for them.
The actor explained that it made him feel detached from reality when it came to Ellie’s situation. As a result, he found himself reminiscing about the joyful moments he shared with Pedro. This emotional recall enabled Ramsey to deliver an exceptional performance in the latest episodes, portraying a confident teenager, then a woman reliving traumatic events, and ultimately a person experiencing transformation.
What always tugs at my heartstrings is reflecting on the joyous moments we shared during ‘The Last of Us‘ Season 1 production,” I mused, “As Joel, Pascal’s character hardened over time, but he eventually came to view Ellie as a daughter. Their friendship was forged amidst a devastated America. It’s amazing to see that off-screen they remain close friends till this day.
What I was recalling was our initial encounters, our entire journey together during season one, and all the funny moments. However, these memories have taken on a different meaning now, as they’re not just about Joel and Ellie, but also about Pedro – because for me, the memories of Pedro, Joel, Ellie, and myself are deeply interconnected.
Bella Ramsey Is Close With All Their Co-Stars
A significant number of viewers of the TV series have grown to despise the character portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, due to her actions that led to Joel’s death. However, it is important to note that no harm should come to Dever for her acting abilities; this was a lesson learned from the unfortunate incident involving Laura Bailey, who played Abby in the video game.
It seems unnecessary to show dislike towards Kaitlyn. I mean, people can be unkind to me as well. Honestly, I don’t appreciate it when that happens. And I believe we’re just portraying characters, so let’s keep things in perspective.
Unfortunately, Ramsey has faced online criticism for not resembling Ellie from the video game. However, their performance has been commended widely.
New episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 air Sundays on HBO and Max.
