Beloved Ex-PlayStation Boss Believes $70, $80 Games Are a Steal

Former PlayStation executive, Shuhei Yoshida, considers video games priced at $70 and $80 as “excellent bargains” when set against the cost of alternative types of entertainment.

At Gamescom LATAM, the recently autonomous executive found himself fielding questions about the escalating prices of video games. Most publishers raised the price of their software to $70 when the PS5 era began, but more recently, Microsoft and Nintendo have disclosed plans to boost the cost of certain titles to $80.

In conversation with Critical Hit Games, Yoshida expressed support for flexible pricing: “Every game offers a unique worth based on its features and budget. I firmly think it’s the publisher’s or developer’s self-publishing choice to set their product’s price according to the value they believe they are offering.

As a devoted enthusiast, I couldn’t help but be thrilled by the remarkable triumph of Clair Obscur’s Expedition 33, which managed to shine even with a budget typically reserved for grander productions – pocketing a significant $50 along the way!

Regarding prices around $70 or $80, I believe these exceptional games offer an unbeatable value when considering the enjoyment they provide relative to other forms of entertainment,” he added.

Although Yoshida’s perspective is understandable – games provide more hours of enjoyment compared to a movie ticket, for instance – it’s challenging to rationalize such high expenses when there are free-to-play options available. It will be intriguing to observe how these prices influence the gaming industry in the future.
