If the creators behind Ben 10 had been able to fully execute their plans for the franchise, Cartoon Network might have developed a universe similar to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, where different shows could interconnect. The series Ben 10 is one of Cartoon Network’s most iconic releases, known for its epic action-adventure storyline that spanned multiple seasons and even multiple universes over many years. However, one of the creators has suggested that with a shared universe including other Man of Action hits, Ben 10 could have reached even greater heights.
In his conversation with Cartoon Base about topic X, Ben 10 creator Duncan Rouleau (a member of the Man of Action team behind the series) shared that one ambition was to establish a interconnected universe like Marvel’s Cinematic Universe for Ben 10, incorporating newer shows such as Generator Rex. Although they had some crossover episodes during their airtime, Rouleau mentioned that it was too grand an idea for Cartoon Network due to the complexity of integrating numerous elements and making them coherent.
Ben 10 Almost Had a Shared Universe
When asked about the possibility of a collaboration between Ben 10 and another series, Rouleau unveiled a grander vision that Man of Action had envisioned: “Our aim was to establish a Marvel Cinematic Universe-like universe for Cartoon Network. [Generator Rex] was one of the characters we had in mind for this expansive universe. Regrettably, the concept was too large for the network.” Expanding on his statement, Rouleau explained that while Ben 10 has made appearances in other shows through crossovers, it proved challenging to maintain a balance between how deeply each show could be intertwined due to audience expectations.
Rouleau stated, “Ben has appeared on other shows, yet difficulties arise when combining characters from different shows due to unmet audience expectations for their beloved characters. To ensure neither character overshadows the other, concessions are often made, which results in toning down power levels, problem-solving skills, and other attributes so that both characters receive equal attention. It seems like crafting a shared universe would have presented even greater challenges in the long run with crossovers being as complex as they are.
Ben 10 Has Some Successful Crossovers
The Ben 10 spin-offs were well-received by Cartoon Network overall, making a shared universe an appealing concept. This is particularly true when considering one of the biggest crossovers, Ben 10/Generator Rex: Heroes United, which combined Generator Rex and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien for the network’s second significant crossover event. This crossover strongly suggested that both shows took place in the same universe, but unfortunately, no further development of this idea occurred.
Initially, Ben 10: Omniverse collaborated with The Secret Saturdays, but this collaboration didn’t fare as well because it required altering the cast of The Secret Saturdays to blend seamlessly with the art style and concepts of Omniverse. Later, Ben 10 appeared in a special crossover episode from O.K. K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, titled “Crossover Nexus”. This episode suggested that the entire Cartoon Network universe was actually part of one interconnected multiverse of heroes, with Ben 10 being a significant character in this crossover event. This particular episode might be the closest we get to seeing a fully integrated Cartoon Network universe concept realized.
If Ben 10 were to come back for another installment in the future, creating a common universe could be more appealing given that viewers are now accustomed to multiverse narratives. Initially, this concept might have seemed premature, but alas, it was before its time.
