Ben Affleck is highly esteemed as an actor, particularly after his comeback in “The Accountant 2” (2025) has been widely acclaimed. However, there are always fans who enjoy reminiscing about earlier successes such as “Dogma” and “Armageddon”. Interestingly, Affleck himself appears to take pride in “Armageddon”, though perhaps not for the reasons one might expect.
Ben Affleck Is Really Proud Of His Armageddon Commentary
While on his latest visit to The Criterion Closet, the Academy Award winner Mr. Affleck rummaged through their premium selection and selected several notable titles. Among these treasures were films such as “Hollywood Shuffle” and “The Rules of the Game”, but what truly caught his eye was a DVD copy of one of his finest works, in its rare Criterion edition, for a personal reason: sentimentality.
It took me aback when I learned that Criterion was making Armageddon, as I hadn’t envisioned them producing a film of this genre. To be honest, looking back, I believe my most noteworthy work in my career is the commentary for this DVD. Many people approach me to discuss the commentary on this disc, almost as much as they do about movies I’ve acted in. The reason is that, at the time, I was so candid and unfiltered.
It wouldn’t surprise me if someone discussing films with the director of “Gone Baby Gone” might bring up that 1998 Michael Bay blockbuster, even though I’d rather talk about “The Sum of All Fears”. However, Ben Affleck’s commentary track on the film is likely to be mentioned in any conversation with him at some point.
In much the same way an ardent Armageddon enthusiast might exclaim what comes next in such a circumstance, Mr. Affleck seized this opportunity to advocate for something our world desperately requires.
I Agree With Ben Affleck: Criterion Needs A 4K Disc For Armageddon
Unfortunately, the Criterion edition of “Armageddon” has been unavailable since its debut in 1999, which implies that the director’s cut and Ben Affleck’s insightful commentary may only be found scattered online. However, the film’s creator still strongly recommends viewing it, and he made a compelling argument for a re-release with this straightforward statement:
However, I don’t want to ruin it for those who are curious about it. At the moment, I created something that I am truly proud of, and honestly didn’t expect it to be as impressive as it now seems to me, back then. By the way, when can we expect the 4K version?
I’m ready! To be honest, I initially delved into physical media collecting via feature-rich DVDs, and it was Criterion that truly piqued my interest first.
To own this gem on my shelf, along with its sibling from The Rock’s hard-to-find Criterion edition, would be quite a treat. If Ben Affleck ever teamed up to record a new commentary track for Armageddon with his skeptical son Samuel, I’d call that a perfect example of “The Student Surpassing the Master.
However, instead of just my opinion, check out Ben Affleck discussing his significant earnings from Criterion in the video below:
This way, the sentence is still clear but uses different words and phrases to make it more engaging and easy to read.
It seems Ben Affleck has recently taken a new look at his earlier openness, possibly reevaluating it. Although he’s never been one to hold back, especially with his recent remarks about California’s production tax credits, this perspective might influence the roles and projects he chooses in the future.
As a movie enthusiast, if that’s how things are, you can bet your bottom dollar we won’t want to miss a single moment of what follows next. Indeed, that was a subtle nod to Armageddon, and I’ll keep up the banter until Criterion delivers that 4K version. Once that wish is granted, watch out, because my crusades for Criterion releases of Master and Commander: Far Side of the World and Tombstone will be next in line! Criterion, you’ve been warned.
