Ranging from “Good Will Hunting” and “Gone Girl”, to “The Town” and “Argo”, it seems he’s mastered every aspect of his craft throughout his career. However, if you were to ask the star of “The Accountant 2” about his most cherished moment, his response could leave you astonished.

On an episode of Criterion’s Selection Spotlight, Affleck selected a handful of movies he deeply admires. Among them were Miller’s Crossing, Badlands, Trainspotting, and The Elephant Man. However, when he spotted a copy of Armageddon on the shelf, it was then that he revealed. The Michael Bay disaster film showcases some of his best career work, not so much in the movie itself, but in the commentary track he recorded for the bonus features. “I was taken aback when I learned that Criterion was working on Armageddon,” he stated. “I didn’t consider it to be that type of film while we were making it.” Affleck further added:

Reflecting on the past, I believe that the commentary on this album could be my most significant career accomplishment. Many people discuss this commentary with me as much as they do movies in which I’ve acted. This is due to the fact that I was genuinely open and honest at the time, unaware of its potential impact. However, I won’t reveal too much for those who are curious. It’s an achievement I am proud of, and one that I didn’t anticipate would be as effective as it has become.

The commentary for the movie “Armageddon” has gained almost as much appreciation as the film itself, with an open and candid Ben Affleck discussing the film’s questionable scenes, such as when he inquired about astronauts being trained to drill oil more easily than oil drillers being trained to be astronauts. Michael Bay responded by telling him to keep quiet, saying something along the lines of “this is a bit of a logic stretch.” In other words, it’s hard to believe they didn’t know anything about drilling, and it can’t be that difficult, right? The coincidence of Affleck stumbling upon an Armageddon copy in the Criterion Closet at this point couldn’t be more opportune, as it was only last month that he had a conversation with GQ about his well-known commentary track. During their interview, they broached the topic and Affleck remarked, “I don’t believe any of the others listened to it or cared until much later when it was played.” He added that everything he said during the recording was accurate because he didn’t realize it at the time since he was unaware of its implications.

Initially, I found myself taken aback and disgusted when I stepped in and began speaking so candidly. To clarify, everything I said was completely accurate, but the issue is that one typically doesn’t share all the facts in such a forum.

Regardless of whether he was truthful or not, what mattered was that Affleck’s performance in the movie made it ten times more entertaining to watch him mock the disaster classic.
