In a recent interview with GQ, Ben Affleck humorously speculated about why his single line from the 1992 movie “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was dubbed by another actor. During his brief appearance as Basketball Player #10, Affleck delivers his only line, “Take it, man,” to a vampire opponent in a high school basketball game sequence. However, when the film was released, this specific line was replaced with another actor’s voice in the final cut directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui. It wasn’t until he watched the movie that Affleck learned about this change.

Affleck clarified that his voice wasn’t initially included in the final cut of the project. He speculates that he might have been given a minor role without lines, which could explain his payment as an extra, but he did record a line. He jokes that it may have been a union rule or the director disliking his performance so much that they replaced him with another actor to say the line.

Affleck’s initial theory suggests that the rules of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG, now SAG-AFTRA) regarding actor categorization and pay scales might have been at play during film production. In this context, actors are often classified into different groups: extras typically have no lines, whereas “featured extras” may perform specific non-speaking actions or be noticeable visually but still won’t speak. On the other hand, principal actors are given speaking roles and are compensated accordingly. If Affleck was initially hired as a featured extra and was given a line during filming, even a brief one, it could potentially breach union contract terms or necessitate an upgrade to a principal actor salary. Dubbing the line with another actor in post-production may have been a way for the production team to adhere to these union regulations or resolve any potential contractual issues that might have arisen later on.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Is Coming Back to TV

Although Ben Affleck’s short-lived involvement in the Buffy universe serves as an interesting historical note, the series is clearly moving forward with excitement for its upcoming revival on Hulu. This fresh installment intends to expand upon the iconic TV show’s legacy by introducing a new set of characters, skillfully weaving in Sarah Michelle Gellar’s original Slayer character along the way.

In a new development, the revival of the beloved series “Buffy” signifies the first successful endeavor to carry on the storyline since its 2003 finale. The pilot will be helmed by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”, “Eternals”), who will also assume the role of an executive producer, infusing her unique cinematic style into the Buffyverse. The writing responsibilities have been entrusted to Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (“Poker Face”), who will additionally serve as showrunners. Notably, Sarah Michelle Gellar is on board as an executive producer alongside original producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton via Sandollar Entertainment, maintaining a strong link to the show’s roots.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to hear about the dedication of Sarah Michelle Gellar in ensuring the revival is spot-on, balancing fan expectations with the necessity for patience. Seth Green has even hinted at his readiness to rejoin, finding comfort in Gellar’s protective stance, saying, “Having Sarah so deeply involved in the revival means she’ll safeguard both the quality of the work and how people feel about it.” James Marsters can’t hide his excitement, adding, “I believe the world needs her.” Lastly, Charisma Carpenter shares my hope for an invitation back. The enthusiasm from original cast members lends a strong sense of authenticity and anticipation to the idea that this revival will recapture the magic that made the original series groundbreaking.
