EastEnders has given an update on Ben Mitchell.
Last year, the oldest child of Phil Mitchell (played by Steve McFadden), was put behind bars earlier than expected due to credit card fraud he committed in the U.S., all in an attempt to discover a miraculous cure for Lola Pearce-Brown (portrayed by Danielle Harold), who was terminally ill at the time.
Last year, during some heartfelt scenes, Ben (Max Bowden), bade goodbye to his partner, Callum Highway (Tony Clay), prior to departing for the United States as part of his character’s departure plotline.
Prior to Christmas, it was noticed that Callum bid goodbye to Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) as he prepared to travel and pay a visit to Ben who was incarcerated in a U.S. penitentiary.
On Wednesday’s broadcast, we found Callum returning to Walford at Kathy’s Café, unexpectedly encountering his father-in-law, Phil.
Later, Callum shared some good news about Ben with Phil. He informed him that Ben was managing fine in prison and maintaining a low profile.
Ben has been dedicating time to physical fitness, looking fantastic, and immersing himself in creative writing. He’s currently in a positive mental state, and recently, Callum had the opportunity to stay overnight with him during his visit – news that should delight Ballum enthusiasts!
Nevertheless, Callum relayed a message from Ben asking Phil to pick up when he calls, but due to Phil’s ongoing mental health issues, he’s been disregarding such requests upon departure.
Friend of Phil, Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), who has been keeping a difficult secret: a young-onset dementia diagnosis, informed Callum that it was Phil’s birthday. However, Phil didn’t seem interested in celebrating.
Callum then suggested getting people together to celebrate Phil’s birthday in the pub.
Yet, at Phil’s place, the head of the Mitchell family came close to tears upon hearing Nigel’s proposal, and he ultimately scrapped the idea, opting for a peaceful evening at home with Nigel instead.
As a film enthusiast, I found myself at The Vic pub, where the lively Mitchell family was getting together for a celebration. Just as the atmosphere was reaching its peak, Nigel made an appearance, sharing the unexpected news that my dear friend Phil would unfortunately not be joining us for our drinks.
As Sharon pursued Nigel, she expressed concern about Phil’s health, to which Nigel replied that Phil was doing better by reminiscing about old times. However, Sharon persisted, suggesting it would be more beneficial for Phil to focus on the present moment. Nigel countered, emphasizing that Phil wasn’t alone because he had someone like him to lean on.
Viewers should know that the mental health issues facing the character Phil on BBC One’s soap opera are expected to worsen over the next few weeks, with him exhibiting signs of psychosis and having thoughts about suicide.
Will Phil be able to get the help he needs?
