As a die-hard fan of Ben Starr and his iconic role as Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy 16, I couldn’t be more excited about his hosting The Golden Joysticks this year! After having the privilege to chat with him during my time at TopMob Gaming, I can attest to his genuine passion for gaming and his humble approach towards his craft.
This year, renowned actor Ben Starr, best known for his role as Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy 16, will be the host of The Golden Joysticks!
Prior to a major awards event, TopMob Gaming was privileged to have a discussion with Starr, which you can view in the embedded video or find on our YouTube channel for a more detailed chat.
During the interview, Ben Starr discusses the highs and lows of the previous year that propelled him to popularity among gaming enthusiasts as a favorite figure.
As the storyline of Clive in Final Fantasy 16 has come to an end, with the game and its additional content leading to a rather conclusive conclusion for the character, one may wonder about Starr’s feelings as he bid farewell to Clive. What did it feel like for him to lay Clive to rest following their journey together?
According to Starr, it feels strange to declare a character finished, as the audience ultimately determines when they’ve had enough. In her opinion, the audience hasn’t yet tired of Clive.
I would never consider discarding a character from my personal history, for they remain an integral part of who I am. Undoubtedly, on my gravestone, it will read, ‘Here rests Ben Starr, who once embodied Clive Rosfield.’
I’m incredibly grateful for the chances that role provided me. Regardless of what else I might perform, if I’m fortunate enough to play a character as memorable as that one, it would be due to him, it would be because of the opportunity he offered. Consequently, there will always be a trace of that experience in whatever I do.
Some individuals may exclusively participate in the game I’m involved with, refusing to engage in any other activities I’m associated with. Acknowledging and accommodating this aspect is an essential part of my role.
As a film enthusiast, I’d prefer not to say, “I’ve moved on from that.” Instead, it’s more like, “If that role defines our connection or your memory of me, then I’m honored to have been the character you remember. After all, characters are eternal, and I’ll always be there for you in those roles, which is truly gratifying.
“But yeah, professionally I’ve moved on, but personally I never will, you know? It’s too cool. It’s Final Fantasy. It’s my favourite franchise of all time. I’m never going to forget it, whether I try to or not. But I’ve just gone, ‘Let’s look to the future now, not the past.’”
Looking ahead, it’s clear that my calendar is brimming post-Clive, as I’ve landed roles in several exciting upcoming games. Among them are Hades II, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and The First Berserker: Khazan. I offer a sneak peek into all these projects in the full video interview!
Amidst all the hustle and bustle, how has Starr been getting ready for his hosting role at The Golden Joysticks? Surprisingly, it doesn’t seem like he’s had trouble fitting in time to play all the contending games.
Starr mentions, “I effortlessly enjoy playing a variety of excellent games, considering myself quite fortunate.
Rather than plowing through his pile of tasks, Starr’s preparation for The Golden Joysticks involves “discovering methods to acknowledge and mirror the past year truthfully.
He stated, “I’m not representing the games or the industry; I’m speaking for myself. I aim to foster an environment where we can express ourselves openly.
My goal is clear, and accordingly, I’m focusing on shaping a setting where individuals experience safety, recognition, and above all, understanding. In simpler terms, I’m striving to establish an atmosphere that makes them feel secure, valued, and listened to.
It may sound surprising, but I genuinely believe this to be true – the winners are often the awards, not the games themselves. So, I’m hoping we can foster such an environment.
I’ll gladly act the fool, serve as your jester if it brings you joy, my dear.
2024’s Golden Joystick Awards will be held on Thursday, 21st November 2024, airing live at 4 PM British Standard Time on the GamesRadar YouTube channel.
