Bend It Like Beckham’s Parminder Nagra says sequel should be “left alone”

Bend It Like Beckham’s Parminder Nagra says sequel should be “left alone”

As a movie critic with a penchant for nostalgia and a soft spot for films that resonate deeply, I must admit that the prospect of revisiting Jess Bhamra in a potential “Bend It Like Beckham” sequel is both exhilarating and apprehensive.

Could there be a possibility that actress Parminder Nagra, currently starring in ITV’s returning crime drama DI Ray (now in its second season), may take on the role of bending it like Beckham once more?

In 2002, Nagra appeared in the sports comedy-drama that Gurinder Chadha directed and co-wrote. This movie also featured Keira Knightley, and it turned out to be a significant stepping stone for both actors.

As a devoted cinephile, I recently found myself reflecting on the thoughts expressed by actress Nagra in an interview with TopMob magazine regarding the possibility of returning to her role as Jess for a follow-up film. Intriguingly, she appeared hesitant about whether revisiting this character would be prudent or not.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve picked up that Gurinder might have hinted at a sequel’s direction somewhere, yet I can’t help but feel that sequels often tread on complex territory.

There’s a lot riding on it, given how cherished it is. It’s hard to conceive of what would happen if Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Breakfast Club had follow-ups. Sometimes, certain stories should remain untouched.

She hasn’t ceased pondering over where Jess could be today, twenty years following the movie’s debut. “Is it possible that she’s coaching now? Could her child be showing an interest in football?

I barely recall the young woman from Bend It, yet it seems like I’m observing another person when I look at her now, despite knowing it’s myself.

In the hit movie “Bend It Like Beckham,” both characters Jess (played by Nagra) and Jules (portrayed by Knightley) strive for careers in professional soccer, a dream that goes against the expectations of those close to them. This film garnered both box office success and positive reviews from critics.

Even though she’s achieved significant success in shows like DI Ray and ER since then, Nagra playfully admitted that the impact of the film continues to shadow her even today.

When kids from my friends’ circle are playing catch with a ball, it seems like people assume I might spontaneously start dancing or showing off skills.

Training for that movie was tough, and I often wonder, if I’d kept it up, I might be much more physically fit now!
