According to reports from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, Bend Studio – famous for creating games like Syphon Filter and Days Gone – has reportedly let go of approximately 40 employees, which represents around 30% of its workforce. This decision comes after the cancellation of a live service project that Bend Studio had been working on this year. Despite Sony’s earlier assurance that the studio wouldn’t shut down, they have not yet commented on possible layoffs.
According to reports, Schreier mentions that the studio has been working on a brand-new project ever since. Interestingly, even with their live service project being terminated simultaneously, it appears that Bluepoint Games won’t be facing any layoffs as of now.
After Sony reassessed its live service project, cancellations ensued. In December 2023, Naughty Dog opted to abandon their standalone multiplayer version of The Last of Us to concentrate on single-player games, including the upcoming Intergalactic. SIE London announced it would shut down in February 2024, and the live-service fantasy game they were working on was consequently cancelled.
Last year, Concord too experienced a significant launch failure, leading to Firewalk Studios shutting down not long after. Similarly, Bungie’s Marathon and Haven Studio’s Fairgame$ have faced their share of difficulties, including the departure of studio founder Jade Raymond from the latter without disclosing the reasons.
According to Bloomberg News, Sony’s Bend Studio – known for cancelling a live-service game earlier this year – is downsizing its workforce today, affecting approximately 40 employees (representing 30% of the staff). Post the cancellation, the studio has been focusing on a new project.
