Benedict Cumberbatch Drops Bombshell About Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday

Benedict Cumberbatch recently disclosed some surprising information about the absence of Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday. Known for portraying Stephen Strange, the former Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe, Cumberbatch has starred in two standalone Doctor Strange movies. With a third film on the horizon and an integral role in the Marvel Multiverse Saga, it was previously announced that Doctor Strange would face off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. However, it seems these plans have encountered a significant obstacle as Cumberbatch has now revealed that Doctor Strange will not be featured in Avengers: Doomsday after all.

Did that reveal contain a plot spoiler?” Benedict Cumberbatch shared with Variety. “Oh well!” The actor explained that the direction for Doctor Strange shifted when Jonathan Majors, who was set to portray the time-traveling Kang the Conqueror and serve as the main antagonist in the Multiverse Saga, was accused of assault and harassment against his former partner. This led to Marvel Studios dismissing Majors from their roster. To adapt, the company brought back Robert Downey Jr. for another MCU appearance as Doctor Doom, changed the title of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” to “Avengers: Doomsday,” and invited Joe and Anthony Russo to direct both “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.

Cumberbatch explained that the character Doctor Strange was excluded from “Avengers: Doomsday” because he didn’t fit well with that particular storyline. But, he mentioned that Doctor Strange has a significant role in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is the sequel to “Avengers: Doomsday,” so this should be reassuring for fans who were disappointed about Doctor Strange’s absence from the earlier film.

Cumberbatch hinted that his character may play a crucial role in future developments. Additionally, he suggested that Sam Raimi could be returning as director for Doctor Strange 3, but did not provide further details. He did mention, though, that he’s relished the teamwork involved with Marvel Studios.

He mentioned they’re eager for ideas on our future direction,” he shared. “Who would you choose as the writer and director for the next installment? Which aspect of the comic book lore do you think would be intriguing to further develop for Doctor Strange, given his complex nature and powerful abilities? He’s a fascinating character with a lot of depth to explore.

The film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” will be released in cinemas on May 1, 2026, with “Avengers: Secret Wars” set to follow suit a year after on May 7, 2027.
