Benedict Cumberbatch supports Green Rider as Hollywood campaigns for climate action

As a lifelong cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood, I must say that the recent appearances of Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Damon at the Climate Film Festival and the Earthshot Prize event are truly heartening. Their unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and social justice is not only inspiring but also a testament to the power of celebrity influence in creating meaningful change.

At the debut of the Climate Film Festival, Benedict Cumberbatch made an appearance, expressing his solidarity with the UK’s Green Rider initiative.

At this event, we had the first showing of the festival, featuring an array of films such as Farming While Black, Ecoside, The Wild Robot, among many others, along with a talk by renowned wildlife filmmaker James Honeyborne.

Throughout the course of the week, Cumberbatch unveiled the fifteen candidates shortlisted for the Earthshot Prize, a joint venture established by Prince William and Sir David Attenborough.

In his speech, Cumberbatch expressed his backing for the Green Rider initiative, stating that by incorporating a green provision into our contracts, performers can ensure that environmental action remains a top priority both on set and in the final product throughout each phase of the filmmaking process.

Working together with our agents and sustainability specialists, we can pinpoint the critical regions that have the greatest influence and effect, and then create intelligent, adaptable solutions. This will not only spur advancement within our own industry but also set a precedent for progress across various studios, professional organizations such as guilds and unions, and educational institutions.

Matt Damon also took to the stage to discuss his and co-founder Gary White’s Water.org and the success it has had in bringing clean water to people worldwide through microloans, having reached 69 million people!

He explained (via The Hollywood Reporter): “It’s emotional for us … it’s really philosophically about looking at people rather than as charity cases needing to be solved but as human beings and as customers and as citizens.

The idea is to demonstrate that by gently guiding the market in a certain direction, allowing individuals to take charge, they are often motivated to find solutions to their own challenges.
