I must confess, even with the Eye of Agamotto’s omniscience, I wouldn’t have foreseen it. At Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con event in July, they unveiled a shocking revelation: Robert Downey Jr., known for his stellar portrayal of Iron Man, will reprise his role, but this time as the antagonist Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” (2026) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (2027). This news left my fellow Avengers co-star Benedict Cumberbatch utterly astonished, as he shared in a recent interview.
In simpler terms, Cumberbatch confided to Variety that he watched the Marvel Comic-Con panel in real time when Downey was revealed as the actor portraying Victor von Doom. He quickly messaged Marvel Studios head and producer, Kevin Feige, exclaiming, “What on earth is going on?” or simply, “I can’t believe it!
“And then quickly added, ‘Good what-the-f—,’” Cumberbatch said. “I mean, good what-the-f—.’”
Benedict Cumberbatch initially played the character of Doctor Strange in the 2016 film “Doctor Strange”. He later reappeared as this character in “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 and two “Avengers” movies, followed by appearances in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021 and the “Doctor Strange” sequel, “In the Multiverse of Madness”, released in 2022. However, Cumberbatch recently announced that he won’t be part of the upcoming “Doomsday” movie, contrary to earlier reports about his involvement in the fifth “Avengers” film. Instead, Doctor Strange will take a break by the time of “Doomsday”, but is expected to return for “Secret Wars” set for release in 2027.
Indeed, Strange plays a significant role in the Secret Wars, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, which concludes Marvel’s Multiverse Saga and Phase Six of the MCU. In the 2015 comic book tale with the same name, Strange served as Sheriff under the authority of Agamotto and was a key figure for God Emperor Doom, who restructured reality following devastating incursions.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my enthusiasm about collaborating with the Russo brothers once more. But that’s not all; the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom has me absolutely thrilled! I have high hopes for some fascinating twists and turns in the storyline, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next.
Though Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) won’t appear together until the upcoming film “Secret Wars,” it seems that Chris Evans, who played Captain America in previous films, is set to reappear in “Doomsday” in an enigmatic role. After bidding farewell to Steve Rogers in 2019’s “Endgame,” Evans made a surprise appearance in the 2024 film “Deadpool & Wolverine” as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, a character he portrayed in the 2005 and 2007 installments of “Fantastic Four.
Marvel Studios has scheduled the Robert Downey Jr.-led film “Avengers: Doomsday” for release on May 1, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” for a release date of May 7, 2027.
