Berserk Staff Condemns Popular Fan Anime Ahead of Its Release

As a long-time fan who has followed Guts’ brutal and epic journey since the early ’90s, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions regarding the current state of Berserk. On one hand, it’s heartening to see the creative team at Studio Gaga and writer Kouji Mori carrying on Miura-sensei’s vision, despite the immense pressure that comes with it. But on the other hand, the condemnation from Studio Eclypse has left a sour taste in many fans’ mouths, myself included.

After the sad death of Kentaro Miura, the creator of Berserk, Studio Gaga, writer Kouji Mori, and publisher Young Animal decided to carry on the story of Guts in order to pay tribute to the late manga artist. Since the manga has been irregularly releasing new chapters, no information about an anime adaptation has been announced yet, which would showcase the journey of the Band of the Hawks. In light of this, various fan studios have been working on animations that depict the story of Guts in their individual styles. However, one of the most prominent projects among these has faced criticism from those involved with the violent manga series.

Making the decision to proceed with “Berserk” after the demise of its creator wasn’t an easy call for those involved in producing the latest manga installments. It took a full year following Miura’s passing before his colleagues at Studio Gaga, along with writer Kouji Mori, felt ready to choose the best way to pay tribute to the deceased artist. This decision was to bring an end to the long-running series. Fortunately, the new creative team in charge was left with notes and comments from Miura about how he envisioned wrapping up the story. As of now, the release date for the next manga chapter remains undetermined, but the series is pushing ahead towards its final conclusion.

What is Studio Eclypse?

If you’re not acquainted, Studio Eclypse is a fan-based studio that has unveiled various trailers for their upcoming production called “Berserk: The Black Swordsman“. At this point, there isn’t a confirmed release date for this animated project. However, the fan group has mentioned they aim to launch it in 2025. As of now, Studio Eclypse hasn’t provided any updates or clarification on whether Hakusensha Inc’s statement implies a change of direction for the project itself.

Besides Eclypse, Studio ARCHE also generated buzz by producing a fan-made anime that aimed to replicate the aesthetic of the 1997 Berserk series, continuing Guts’ story from where the original series ended. With the official franchise’s recent announcement, the future of these Berserk fan animations remains unclear.

Berserk’s Anime Future

Fans of Band of the Hawk haven’t had a chance to watch Berserk on television since the compilation series, Berserk: Memorial Edition. The latest anime is based on Studio 4°C’s original trilogy films that reimagined the Golden Age Arc, with some additional scenes incorporated into the storyline, which were initially cut out. Despite the ongoing popularity of the franchise, no future anime adaptation of Berserk has been announced yet.

Although Anime versions of Berserk have existed, many of its narratives remain untold on screen. If The Band of the Hawk were to reappear in the animation industry, there are plenty of battles and occurrences that could fill multiple seasons, or even films, for an animated adaptation.
