As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for detective dramas and a soft spot for complex characters, I find myself drawn to the enigmatic Adam Dalgliesh, portrayed brilliantly by Bertie Carvel in the Channel 5 series. The third season of this gripping saga based on PD James’ novels returns this week, promising to delve deeper into our protagonist’s life as he grapples with loss and finds solace in his work.
Actor Bertie Carvel, who plays Dalgliesh in the popular detective series airing on Channel 5, recently spoke about the show’s upcoming third season, set to premiere this week and adapted from the books by PD James.
In the 1970s, this series introduces us to the main character, Adam Dalgliesh (played by Carvel), who is going through a tough time as he’s dealing with profound grief following his wife’s death and being left a widower.
Yet, his significant contributions have allowed him to uncover some significance once more. Carvel hints that the character may undergo a change in direction during the third season, suggesting that the “sliver of ice in his heart” might be melting away.
In our recent discussions, I must admit a strong desire to dive deeper. However, when it comes to finding new novels to adapt, I’m not sure there are many more out there. As for predicting the future, that’s beyond my expertise, truly.
“I’d certainly love to do more, let’s put it that way.”
Carvel subtly suggested that if audience interest persists beyond the available novels for adaptation, he would find it fascinating to explore new tales featuring Dalgliesh, as conceived by the present showrunner, Helen Edmundson.
Carvel pointed out that while the adaptation stays faithful to PD James’ work, it will never replicate the original due to differences in format. Instead, it will always be a unique creation of its own.
“And I guess what I’m saying is I’m really excited to see what Helen wants to do next.”
If events turn out differently and Dalgliesh season 3 ends up being the last installment of the series, Carvel is certain that fans will find it a satisfying conclusion to the story arc, providing a fitting climax for the title character’s journey.
He added: “I believe we’ve arrived at a fitting pause in the narrative. To put it simply, if we stop here, the story unfolds as that of a man consumed by sorrow, who interacts with the deceased and embarks on an internal and spiritual quest to cope with his grief by spending more time among the departed.
“I’m ready to leave it behind now, I’ve had a good time, but I’d also happily do more.”
