As a seasoned television enthusiast with a soft spot for British shows, let me tell you that this year’s festive lineup is nothing short of a delight! From the return of old favorites like The Great British Bake Off and Taskmaster to exciting newcomers such as MasterChef: Legends, there’s something for everyone.

Christmas spells mince pies, carols and most importantly, some great telly.

During the holiday season, there’s an abundance of unique episodes, fresh series, and exciting comebacks featuring shows like Gavin & Stacey, Outnumbered, and Doctor Who, among others.

These beloved shows – Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise, Sister Boniface Mysteries, and The Good Ship Murder – are returning with special episodes for the holiday season. Additionally, soap operas will no doubt provide us with their trademark suspenseful year-end plot twists.

You can look forward to the upcoming seasons of shows such as Squid Game, SAS Rogue Heroes, and The Split: Barcelona, in addition to beloved classics like Tiddler and Wallace & Gromit: The Case of the Feathered Wrath.

Best Christmas TV for 2024 – Your guide to what to watch

1. Gavin & Stacey: The Finale

Fans have eagerly anticipated this comedy special ever since the last Gavin & Stacey Christmas special in 2019, and now it’s here! As the series draws to a close, we revisit our cherished characters for one final, triumphant farewell.

In this 90-minute episode, we’ll fast-forward through time to catch up with the current state of affairs for characters Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page), focusing on their married life and family developments in Billericay and Barry. Naturally, many viewers will be eager to learn about the outcome for Nessa (Ruth Jones) and Smithy (James Corden) following the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of the last episode.

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale will air on BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day.

2. Outnumbered

The Brockman family is back for a long-awaited comeback in the popular BBC comedy series “Outnumbered”. This new episode marks the first one since 2019. Original actors Hugh Dennis (playing dad Pete), Claire Skinner (as mom Sue), Tyger Drew-Honey (the eldest son Jake), Daniel Roche (middle child Ben), and Ramona Marquez (daughter Karen) are all reprising their roles in this return.

The upcoming episode will delve into the disarray within the compacted Brockman household, as Pete and Sue navigate the complexities of raising adult children. Earlier this year, Marquez expressed her expectations for Karen, stating: “I’m certain she’ll be up to something outrageous, and she’ll undoubtedly spin her intricate plots. I believe she’ll simply remain the same Karen.

In a similar vein, Roche expressed about Ben: “I’m wishing for him to thrive or, at the very least, retain the peculiar traits of his artistry. I don’t want him to become an odd grown-up, essentially.

Outnumbered Christmas special will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

3. Doctor Who: Joy to the World

Without a thought-provoking science fiction enigma to ponder during Christmas, it wouldn’t quite feel like the holiday, would it? The beloved Doctor Who is back for a special yuletide episode before its 15th season starts next year. In this occasion, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor will be accompanied by Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton, as her character Joy appears on the show.

Entitled “Joy to the World,” the specific details of this upcoming episode are being kept secret, however, it’s worth noting that the script was written by previous showrunner Steven Moffat, who has hinted at what viewers can expect.

In a conversation with BBC South East, Moffat stated: “Picture this scenario in the distant future: a hotel company discovers time travel. The question is, what would be the first action of such a company? They’d recognize they had a unique chance to sell every unsold night at their hotels throughout history.

Doctor Who: Joy to the World will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

4. Sister Boniface Mysteries Christmas special

It’s time to return to the close-knit town of Great Slaughter for another mystery that’s set to get both Sister Boniface and viewers at home thinking. The new feature-length episode will centre on the Great Slaughter Amateur Dramatics Society (GSADS) and their upcoming production of Cinderella.

However, should a cast member meet an unexpected and mysterious death, the search for the murderer begins swiftly to prevent further tragedies. Can Sister Boniface and Sam (Max Brown) unravel the mystery before events take an even more ominous course?

The Sister Boniface Mysteries Christmas special will be broadcast on UKTV’s U&Drama channel on Friday, the 20th of December, starting at 8 o’clock in the evening.

5. All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special

Looking ahead, we’ll be back at Skeldale House for season 6 soon. In the meantime, fans of this charming Channel 5 series can anticipate a festive special coming up!

The specifics about the episode’s storyline are still under wraps, but it promises to be filled with touching scenes and perhaps a couple of intense veterinary scenarios. Last Christmas was particularly memorable as baby Jimmy made his debut, so this time around, the holiday season will undoubtedly hold special significance for Helen (Rachel Shenton) and James (Nicholas Ralph).

All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special will air on Channel 5.

6. Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

In a sense, the latest Aardman production follows up the storyline of Wallace & Gromit’s adventure titled “The Wrong Trousers,” where we were introduced to the notorious Feathers McGraw. Indeed, in this new tale, Feathers makes a return with a vengeance, plotting revenge against our protagonists who had previously thwarted his villainous schemes.

The acclaimed stop-motion team has reached new heights! Peter Kay is back as Inspector Macintosh, along with guest appearances from Diane Morgan (“Motherland”), Adjoa Andoh (“Bridgerton”), Muzz Khan (“Brassic”), and Sir Lenny Henry (“Three Little Birds”).

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl will air on BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day.

7. Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special

It wouldn’t quite be Christmas without an episode of Strictly Come Dancing and a one-episode battle for the Silver Star trophy. While last year saw the triumph of EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick and professional dancer Nancy Xu, all eyes are on the dancefloor this time round to see who will know their Paso Doble from their Cha Cha.

This year’s Christmas special has finally unveiled its complete lineup, featuring personalities such as comedian Josh Widdicombe, long-time EastEnders star Tazmin Outhwaite, television host Vogue Williams, drag artist Tayce, Gladiators alum Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, and racing driver Billy Monger. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see who rises to the occasion!

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

8. Strike: The Ink Black Heart

Fans of the show Strike can look forward to its comeback on screens this December, as a new season is on the way after a two-year hiatus. Actors Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger will once more step into their roles as Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, suggesting that there might be holiday celebrations in the upcoming storyline for our detective pair.

The new season centres on Edie Ledwell, the co-creator of a cult TV cartoon, The Ink Black Heart, who is being harassed by an online figure, Anomie. She asks Robin to uncover Anomie’s true identity but soon, a complicated web starts to unfold when Robin finds out Edie has been murdered.

Strike: The Ink Black Heart premieres on Monday 16th December at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.

9. Tiddler

Once again, we’re eagerly awaiting another fantastic Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler animation, suitable for everyone. This upcoming half-hour animated special is derived from the popular picture book with the same title. It narrates the tale of a small fish who possesses a vast imagination, venturing far into the vast ocean only to be rescued by the power of his own storytelling.

Hannah Waddingham, famed from Ted Lasso, is set to narrate the story. Joining her are a host of other talented actors, including Lolly Adefope (Ghosts), who takes on the role of Miss Skate, Jayde Adams (Ruby Speaking) as Plaice, and Rob Brydon (Gavin & Stacey). Notably, Brydon will voice multiple characters in this adaptation, such as Fisherman, Whale, Starfish, and Anchovy.

Tiddler will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

10. EastEnders

I can’t help but feel excited as everyone knows that an EastEnders Christmas special is always packed with dramatic plotlines, and this year seems to be no exception. Unlike last year which revolved around The Six, this time we’re dealing with the aftermath of that situation, as Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) struggles even more, and a chilling hint that some figures from her past may resurface once again.

This Christmas storyline primarily centers on characters Junior Knight, portrayed by Micah Balfour, and Cindy Beale, played by Michelle Collins. Their clandestine relationship is about to be unveiled in a shocking way through a recording, which will lead to chaos for both the Beales and the Knights families.

In other plots, Denise Fox (Diane Parish) may succumb to temptation regarding Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara). Additionally, there’s an upcoming emotional narrative revolving around Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), as he grapples with feelings of despair and loneliness, battling thoughts of suicide.

EastEnders broadcasts every Monday through Thursday at 7:30 PM on BBC One, and starting from 6 AM, it’s also available on BBC iPlayer. The holiday special will be shown on BBC One this Christmas Day.

11. The Good Ship Murder Christmas

Fans of “The Good Ship Murder” can rejoice as the series has been extended for two additional seasons and a holiday special on Channel 5, guaranteeing its continued presence in the lineup following the triumph of its first season.

The Good Ship Murder Christmas special will air on Wednesday 18th December at 9pm on Channel 5.

12. Coronation Street

This holiday season, all attention is focused on Gail (Helen Worth), as the Coronation Street icon prepares to bid farewell soon. Producer Kate Brooks hints at a dramatic departure: “Many surprises are in store. The story unfolds around Gail’s wedding, although whether it takes place or not remains to be seen. I can’t reveal too much, but it revolves around the Platt family and is full of holiday cheer. It’s a tale about family bonds and how hidden truths can shatter and disrupt a family.

In addition, there’s expected to be quite a bit of intense plotlines featuring Daniel, Daisy, and Bethany. Moreover, the residents of Weatherfield will learn about Carla and Lisa’s romance. Brooks hinted at this new pairing saying, “They are bound to encounter many unexpected challenges in 2025. It’s not a tranquil year for them, and they’ll face numerous obstacles along the way.

Coronation Street airs weeknights on ITV. The Christmas special will air on Christmas Day.

13. Bad Tidings

In this Sky holiday special, you’ll find Chris McCausland, Lee Mack, and Rebekah Staton as the main stars. This heartwarming special was penned by Laurence Rickard & Martha Howe-Douglas, who are also known for their work on “Ghosts” and “Horrible Histories”, alongside Chris McCausland himself.

A week before Christmas, neighbours Neil (Mack) and Scott (McCausland) have a contentious relationship, far from friendly. However, when their ongoing feud escalates to an unprecedented level, causing a power outage on their entire street just one day prior to the holiday, the community chooses to stay out of the situation, leaving Neil and Scott to safeguard their belongings.

As a movie enthusiast, I find myself wondering: Could it be that a notorious criminal clan intends to plunder our very street? If so, can these two neighbors, often at odds with one another, set aside their differences to become unlikely heroes and protect our community?

Bad Tidings will air on Sky and NOW.

14. Squid Game season 2

Despite not being your typical holiday viewing, there’s no arguing that the arrival of a fresh Squid Game installment is nothing short of thrilling! The upcoming season finds our protagonist Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) on a quest for vengeance, mourning those who perished in the deadly games from the previous season.

I find myself intrigued by his decision to invest his winnings towards unveiling the hidden forces controlling these games. It quickly becomes apparent that dismantling the system requires a stealthy approach, and so, inevitably, I find myself drawn back in.

Squid Game season 2 will be available to stream on Netflix on Thursday 26th December.

15. Call the Midwife Christmas special

This year, it’s time for us to revisit Nonnatus House and enjoy another installment of Call the Midwife. However, unlike other years, the BBC series will offer fans a special treat: not just one, but two full episodes instead of the usual 90-minute one. So, we can look forward to two hour-long episodes!

As a movie critic, here’s my take on it: In the upcoming episodes, I find myself in Poplar, eagerly anticipating a joyful carol concert. However, the merriment quickly turns somber when whispers of an escaped prisoner sweep through our community. Could this fugitive be responsible for the recent spate of burglaries? The tension escalates as we also brace ourselves for cases of influenza and the Hong Kong flu. Yet, amidst these troubling times, the cast assures us that their unique brand of humor will still shine through.

Call the Midwife’s Christmas special episodes will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

16. Mariah Meets Rylan

If you’re not currently humming, singing, or attempting to croon “All I Want for Christmas Is You” during this season, then it turns out that this classic Mariah Carey tune is marking its 30th anniversary! So, why not celebrate the milestone with an exclusive interview?

In this exclusive BBC Two feature, presenter Rylan Clark has a captivating conversation with the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. This in-depth interview delves into various aspects of Carey’s life, career, creative influences, and her most iconic collaborations. Given that she is known as the “Queen of Christmas” to countless fans, this special interview promises to be a delightful treat for them, as they get insights into her holiday traditions, music, and much more.

Mariah Meets Rylan will air on BBC Two and iPlayer.

17. Missing You

Every year after Christmas festivities, Netflix usually releases a captivating Harlan Coben thriller that’s perfect for a New Year’s binge-watch. This tradition continues in 2025 as “Missing You” drops on the 1st of January, ready to capture your attention and become your next series fixation.

In the latest series, Rosalind Eleazar portrays Detective Kat Donovan, whose world is flipped when she spots her ex-fiancé Josh (Ashley Walters) on a dating app more than a decade after he mysteriously disappeared. His sudden reemergence sparks a chain of events that ultimately propels Kat to investigate her father’s murder and uncover secrets from her past.

The upcoming drama features actors like Ashley Walters, Sir Lenny Henry, Richard Armitage, Jessica Plummer, James Nesbitt, and many others.

Missing You will be available to stream on Netflix on 1st January 2025.

18. The Young Offenders Christmas special

In the MacSweeney home, preparations for a forthcoming new member are bustling, as the BBC sitcom resumes – and naturally, Conor is all about ensuring his mom receives nothing but the finest.

In an attempt to cultivate a more organized home environment, Mairéad endeavors to show Conor the correct way of tidying up. However, while sorting through his belongings, she unexpectedly finds a firearm – a weapon that Conor claims is just being temporarily kept for a friend’s needs.

According to the summary, it’s revealed that Billy Murphy (played by Shane Casey) fears no one more than Jack Hammer. Despite it being Christmas Eve, Mairéad urges him to give back the handgun to Hammer.

The Young Offenders Christmas special will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

19. Inside No 9: The Party’s Over

Although devotees of Inside No. 9 might feel a bit disheartened by the news that it won’t come back for a tenth season, fear not! This holiday season, Inside No. 9: The Party’s Over will offer an alternative treat. It’s not a new season but rather a look at the making of the popular dark comedy series. Expect interviews with the cast and plenty of intimate, candid moments with creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton.

Inside No. 9: The Party’s Over will air on BBC Two and iPlayer.

20. SAS Rogue Heroes season 2

In a bustling flurry, creator Steven Knight of the gripping wartime series “Peaky Blinders” is hard at work, yet eager fans can look forward to the arrival of season 2 imminently.

Starting in Spring 1943, the storyline moves from Cairo to Europe’s mainland, focusing on Paddy Mayne (played by Jack O’Connell), who assumes command of the SAS after David Stirling’s (Connor Swindells) arrest. This change of setting and characters unfolds as the series progresses.

As the fate of the GHQ hangs in balance, a fresh team emerges and an unexpected guest makes their way in, promising a thrilling ride comparable to the initial season. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping series to spend your holiday break with, we highly recommend it.

SAS Rogue Heroes season 2 will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

21. Death in Paradise Christmas special

Following Ralf Little’s departure from his role as Detective Neville Parker, the series on Saint Marie is about to undergo a change with Don Gilet joining the cast as DI Mervin Wilson. We can expect some tension among the locals given the tradition of an English detective stirring things up. Additionally, we are in for one of the team’s most intricate mysteries to solve.

In a puzzling turn of events, three individuals met their end, each discovered dressed as Santa Claus and apparently unrelated. However, they shared an eerie similarity: all were slain using the same method and around the same timeframe. This chilling mystery presents quite a challenge for Detective Wilson, who is handling his first case on this island.

Death in Paradise’s 2024 Christmas special will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

22. Casualty Christmas special

Fans of Casualty should brace themselves for a heartrending festive special, labeled as a “dramatically intense” episode. Airing on Christmas Day, the storyline will find the emergency department team grappling with a critical blood shortage, with Stevie (Elinor Lawless) battling tirelessly to save lives.

In this scenario, Iain (Michael Stevenson) jeopardizes his own safety to ensure the hospital doesn’t face a shortage, as described by the BBC. The upcoming episode is intended to be a heartfelt tribute to the power of blood, skillfully blending tension and emotional depth that Casualty is known for.

In addition to our regular actors, the following stars join us for this episode: Lucy-Jo Hudson from Wild at Heart, Tristan Sturrock known for Poldark, Joseph Charles from Breathtaking, Zoe Brough of Outrageous, Katy Carmichael starring in Malpractice, and Valerie Antwi, who appears in DI Ray.

Casualty’s Christmas special will air on BBC One and iPlayer.

23. Beyond Paradise Christmas special

At Christmas time, we’re back in Shipton Abbott where Humphrey (Kris Marshall) finds himself entangled in not just one, but two mysteries. Apart from a church burglary that could spoil the holiday service, the team is also looking into Bob Holland (Mark Heap), a man grieving over his wife’s passing and finding it particularly difficult to celebrate Christmas for the first time without her.

According to him, he asserts that his deceased spouse appears to him in visions, instructing him to depart from his residence. When he discusses these occurrences with his team, they’re perplexed about whether it might simply be Bob experiencing profound grief or if something more significant is unfolding.

In addition to the regular detective work, the upcoming Christmas episode will also delve into the progress of Humphrey and Martha’s (Sally Bretton) foster care journey. They will welcome shy teenage boy Jaiden (Austin Taylor) into their home during the holiday season.

25. The Chelsea Detective Christmas special

In December, we’ll have another installment of “The Chelsea Detective” just in time for the holidays. This special episode will kick off Season 3, which is scheduled to air in 2025.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that I’ll once again step into the shoes of DI Max Arnold, while my trusted partner DS Layla Walsh, portrayed by Vanessa Emme, will be alongside me. Our mission this time? To delve into the mysterious death of the once-popular Chloe Carmichael, discovered in her luxurious Chelsea residence. Initially, we entertain the idea of a drug overdose as the cause, but it’s not long before we uncover a far more sinister truth: Chloe was submerged in her own bathwater. The investigation is on, and we won’t rest until we unravel the secrets surrounding this tragic death.

During their journey, they encounter various individuals who potentially could’ve harmed Chloe, such as a Conservative Member of Parliament, a manager, and a reporter. However, the question remains: Who was responsible and what motivated them to act?

The Chelsea Detective’s Christmas 2024 special will air on Monday 16th December on Acorn TV.

26. Emmerdale

There’s not a lot that’s been revealed yet about the forthcoming Christmas special of Emmerdale, but we can expect it to be packed with unexpected twists and turns, as is typical for this series.

It was recently reported that a character death could very well be on the horizon but we do know for a fact that Christmas will be a decidedly brighter period for Belle (Eden Taylor Draper) after her devastating storyline with abuser Tom (James Chase).

Producer Laura Shaw hinted at Belle’s whereabouts this holiday season: “From the start, we understood that Belle required some form of resolution with Tom. Our Emmerdale viewers eagerly anticipate the downfall of our villains, and we won’t ruin the ending of this story by disclosing Tom’s fate. However, it’s safe to say that Belle will be in a much improved situation come Christmas.

The one-time special is expected to feature Philomena delving into some of the most intricate ideas ever conceived, such as Quantum Physics, Existentialism, Nihilism, Hedonism, and at least four other “isms.” She will also touch upon various topics ranging from the Big Bang to biology, ethics to meditation, art to artificial intelligence.

As a film enthusiast, I’m excitedly looking forward to delving into the synopsis: “In my quest for enlightenment, I’ll be exploring some of history’s profound thinkers and innovative creators. From Fyodor Dostoyevsky to Vincent Van Gogh, Friedrich Nietzsche to the genius behind those kitchen signs that read ‘Live Laugh Love’, I can hardly wait to unravel their stories and insights.

Cunk on Life will air on BBC Two and iPlayer.

31. The Split: Barcelona

In simpler terms, the critically acclaimed legal drama “The Split,” created by Abi Morgan, is coming back for a delightful two-episode run. The main characters will be reprising their roles, along with some fresh additions to the cast.

Over the course of a weekend, this two-part series promises a mix of reunions, romantic encounters, and perhaps even some heartbreaks as Hannah (Nicola Walker) navigates her journey towards finding love once more. As the Defoe family gathers for an extravagant wedding in Catalonia’s vineyard region, topics such as love, matrimony, and inheritance will undoubtedly surface.

He might delve into pressing concerns such as the UK’s cost of living crisis and ongoing global conflicts, offering insights and perhaps proposing solutions for these critical issues. Furthermore, given the health challenges that have affected our royal family this year, I expect him to touch upon this sensitive subject, sharing hopeful words that resonate with all.

At 80 years old, Johnston holds the record as the oldest cast member in the show’s past, leaving us curious to find out if this will give her an advantage in potentially winning a replica of Greg Davies’s head during the awards ceremony.
