As a seasoned cinephile with a keen eye for intrigue and a heart full of empathy, I find myself captivated by the forthcoming cinematic offerings this September. The tales that unfold on the silver screen are not only a testament to human resilience but also serve as a mirror to our collective psyche.
2024’s summer movie season has wrapped up, yet the remainder of the year promises a wealth of thrilling cinematic experiences – beginning this very month.
In September, we’re excited for the highly anticipated debut of Tim Burton’s sequel to Beetlejuice, titled simply Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. This new release brings back Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder in their beloved roles from the first film, which recently made a grand entrance at the Venice Film Festival.
Later in the month, there are also a couple of very intriguing releases for horror fans.
Starting off, I’m excited to share that I’ll be diving into the remake of the 2022 Danish thriller “Speak No Evil,” starring James McAvoy. Then, there’s “The Substance,” a film that has received widespread praise – though it seems to have stirred up some debate – from critics. This body horror masterpiece is helmed by French writer and director Coralie Fargeat, with Demi Moore taking on the lead role.
In other places, you’ll find upcoming movies featuring actors such as Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan, and Ian McKellen, along with the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s personal project Megalopolis, which hits theaters at the end of this month.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Release date: Friday 6th September in cinemas
Tim Burton has produced a follow-up to his beloved 1988 film, bringing back Michael Keaton as the central bio-exorcist character. Additionally, Jenna Ortega is among the new cast members, while Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara reprise their earlier roles in this production.
On their recent visit to Winter River, following a sorrowful family event, the Deetz family once more encounter Beetlejuice, who remains as troublesome as always. However, he now faces an additional challenge in the form of a former spouse seeking revenge.
Firebrand
Release date: Friday 6th September in cinemas
In this historical drama, it’s Alicia Vikander who portrays Catherine Parr, while Jude Law assumes the role of King Henry VIII. This intriguing story is masterfully brought to life under the direction of the talented Brazilian director, Karim Aïnouz.
In a dramatized portrayal, the story centers around Catherine, who struggles to stay alive in the waning days of King Henry’s rule. As he deteriorates due to sickness and paranoia, she is falsely accused of blasphemy and other presumed wrongdoings by members of his court.
Speak No Evil
Release date: Friday 13th September in cinemas
In a fresh take on a 2022 Danish movie, this remake delves into the repercussions of an American family residing in the U.K. forming friendships with a British vacationing family, which later leads to an invitation to their countryside residence – resulting in a sequence of terrifying events.
In a chilling performance by James McAvoy, the movie deviates from its original version in a few significant aspects, particularly the drastically reworked climax.
Lee
Release date: Friday 13th September in cinemas
In this celebrated ensemble piece, Kate Winslet takes on the role of acclaimed war photographer Lee Miller, with the film centering primarily on her groundbreaking efforts following World War II, particularly during its closing stages.
For Winslet, this film serves as a deeply personal endeavor. It’s helmed by Ellen Kuras, boasting an impressive ensemble of talented actors such as Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Josh O’Connor, and Alexander Skarsgård in supporting roles.
The Critic
Release date: Friday 13th September in cinemas
In this 1930s-based thriller, the story is inspired by the 2015 novel “Curtain Call,” where Sir Ian McKellen takes on the role of an aging theater critic. After being replaced at his long-held newspaper position by a new owner, he devises a cunning extortion plot to maintain his influence and power in the world of drama.
The plan features Nina Land, portrayed by Gemma Arterton (a stage actress), who’s been on the receiving end of some harsh criticism from reviews due to his frequent critiques, alongside a supporting cast that includes Mark Strong, Lesley Manville, and Romola Garai.
The Substance
Release date: Friday 20th September in cinemas
The grisly body-horror movie helmed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat sparked some controversy upon its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. However, it garnered many favorable comments, particularly for the outstanding portrayal of Demi Moore in the leading role.
In a different turn of events, she portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, the hostess of an aerobics program. On her fiftieth birthday, however, she receives unexpected termination. Later, she learns of a strange compound that claims to revolutionize her life and provide a solution to her concerns about growing older.
The Outrun
Release date: Friday 27th September in cinemas
In the poignant drama, Saoirse Ronan’s portrayal of a recently rehabilitated young woman has sparked speculation that she might be a strong candidate for upcoming awards.
Under the guidance of German director Nora Fingscheidt and co-written by her, the story unfolds about Rona, a woman who has struggled with alcoholism. After spending time living precariously in London, she seeks solace by returning to her home in the Orkney Islands, hoping to mend from her past experiences on the edge of society.
Megalopolis
Release date: Friday 27th September in cinemas
There’s been a great deal of discussion surrounding Francis Ford Coppola’s grand, celebrity-filled, prolonged production that he partially financed himself. However, will the final product live up to the anticipation and the investment?
I’m a backer supporting this production, and let me tell you, it’s Adam Driver who takes on the role of the visionary architect Cesar Catilina in our fictional city, New Rome. His grand, idealistic blueprint for the city’s future clashes dramatically with that of the mayor, Franklyn Cicero, portrayed brilliantly by Giancarlo Esposito.
My Old Ass
Release date: Friday 27th September in cinemas
At its premiere at Sundance in January, this independent drama, centered around a young woman warned by her own future self against falling in love, garnered positive reviews. The captivating portrayal of the main character by actress Maisy Stella was particularly commended.
In Megan Park’s direction, the movie features Aubrey Plaza playing a modest yet impactful character.
