STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a substantial video game. Although the main emphasis lies in enduring the challenging conditions within The Zone, the game also offers an intricate narrative that connects to both the previous STALKER games and the original novel, Roadside Picnic.
In the course of playing STALKER 2, you’ll encounter various entities such as mutated creatures, hostile factions, and mad shamans. Abandoned and active Soviet facilities are also prevalent, along with a wide array of mysterious and lethal anomalies and relics.
To understand the situation better amidst all the confusion, focusing on the primary mission objectives might be beneficial for you.
As players delve deeper into the game’s universe, they not only progress systematically but also encounter some of the game’s most thrilling moments, with these events growing increasingly grandiose as multiple storylines gradually converge.
In the course of this narrative, your choices will significantly shape both the game’s universe and final outcome. However, the upcoming missions carry the greatest potential to leave an enduring impression on you.
8. There and Back Again
The Lesser Zone
Initially venturing into The Zone unlawfully, the mission titled “There and Back Again” skillfully communicates the enigma, suspense, and ethical dilemma that comes with such an illegal infiltration.
Following a brief disagreement with Hermann, Skif leaps beyond the outer limit only to encounter an extraordinary phenomenon, levitating massive slabs of concrete.
Despite the straightforward nature of the mission, you’ll encounter a significant obstacle – a solitary Bloodsucker that ambushes close to the chemical anomaly pools.
At this point in the game, it becomes an undeniably challenging endeavor, yet it skillfully prepares players for the harshness and ferocity of The Zone. The mission effectively acclimates players to the array of weapons, creatures, devices, and factions within The Zone, leaving no doubt that you are but a tiny fish in a vast ocean.
7. Wishful Thinking
SIRCAA
In contrast to the usual harsh, uninviting environment portrayed in the game’s narrative, “Wishful Thinking” and subsequent quests offer a refreshing change of scenery. Instead of traversing the Zone, Skif finds himself in a meticulously maintained scientific complex managed by SIRCAA.
Taking this short break offers an opportunity to truly grasp the transient quality of The Zone and comprehend the degree of control exerted in its supposed management, which is quite authoritarian in nature.
During this short deviation, both missions titled “In Quest of a Miraculous Encounter” and “A Timely Reunion” unfold, offering players an opportunity to engage with significant figures like Dr. Dalin and Agatha.
As you tour the facilities and interact with the Monolith artifacts, you’ll also encounter a task that involves eliminating several mutants who have managed to escape from the Cryptobiology laboratory.
6. The Assault on the Duga
Duga
The battle ‘Duga’ offers two distinct perspectives, either joining Spark or Ward. Regardless of your choice, you’re in store for an extraordinary visual experience that’s nothing short of spectacular.
During the cover of night, the operation for Spark/HTC Malachite begins subtly with a covert phase. As you ascend to the surface, tranquility gives way to pandemonium. It’s breathtaking when, for the first time, the Duga illuminates at night.
On the Ward pathway, our operations will transpire under broad daylight. Unlike previous missions involving covert tunnel-cleaning stages, this time around, we’ll find ourselves engaging more openly in combat.
Regardless, Faust sets off the Duga system and brings down a Ward helicopter nearby, an impressive spectacle to behold. In either scenario, the operation will force Skif to withdraw due to the overpowering might of the device post-activation by Faust.
5. Happiness for Everyone
Duga
The title “Happiness for Everyone,” taken from a significant line in the book that serves as the foundation for the STALKER series, signifies Red Schuhart’s plea when faced with the Wish Granter anomaly towards the conclusion of the narrative.
In this operation, Skif is assigned to carry out a secondary attack on the Duga location, along with eliminating the target known as Faust.
OR
On this mission, Skif’s objective includes launching another strike at Duga and neutralizing Faust.
OR
Skif must execute a follow-up attack against Duga and take out Faust in this assignment.
At the end of the boss fight, things get quite unusual as Faust delves into explaining The Zone’s essence and C-Consciousness to Skif – crucial themes for grasping the lore and narrative of the STALKER series.
Apart from the covert areas and the intense fight against Faust, gamers will additionally enjoy a breathtaking panorama of The Zone, accessible atop the Duga.
4. Legends of The Zone
Cordon
Despite having played the initial STALKER games just for a short while long ago, revisiting “The Legends of The Zone” recently brought back a wonderful wave of nostalgia.
As a gamer embarking on this mission, I find myself revisiting familiar locales and faces from past games, yet the experience remains fresh and exciting even for those who haven’t played the originals. It feels like I’m finally joining forces with the few reliable allies in The Zone, as if my journey is finally coming full circle.
Your journey leads you to revisit the town of Cordon, where you’ll converse with Sidorovich. He often alludes to incidents and personalities from previous games, such as the “Marked One”, a character known as Strelok, who was the main character in the initial game.
As your journey progresses, you’ll soon encounter Strelok face-to-face and discover a wealth of details about the enigmas of The Zone, including insights into how the Noosphere influences Stalkers’ thoughts and generates illusions.
3. The Road to the Foundation
Pripyat
Stepping foot in Pripyat for the very first time is undeniably an unforgettable moment, and it seems like the entire game has been building towards this significant juncture.
After entering the Pripyat region, “The Pathway to Origin” serves as the following task, and it certainly lives up to expectations.
In the gaming world, my initial task is to meet up with Colonel Degtyarev at the Energetik Palace of Culture, a venue that’s familiar to many who played ‘Call of Duty’ during the legendary “All Ghillied Up” mission. Let’s see if I can track him down like I used to hunt enemies in the game!
Upon your arrival, a fierce firefight is likely to break out between the Corps defenders and the advancing Monolith troops. Once this skirmish has been resolved, Colonel Degtyarev will dispatch you on a mission to scour the deserted metropolis for crucial data from a downed helicopter.
Interestingly, the helicopter houses a highly aggressive Chimera, resulting in a thrilling boss battle that marks the end of the mission.
2. Down Below
Pripyat
In the term “Down Below”, we find the pivotal point in STALKER 2 where further progression is non-reversible. Beyond this stage, adventurers can no longer retrace their steps into The Zone for more exploration or to finish any remaining optional missions.
In this adventure, various paths could unfold based on your past choices within the narrative, yet each route concludes with a grand showdown against Colonel Korshunov – that is, unless you’ve opted for the ‘Ward’ option at every juncture throughout the gameplay.
The mission presents two strategies: a covert approach or a direct attack at the facility gates. Regardless of your chosen path, you’ll have backup from Strelok’s top-tier troops.
All in all, this journey stands out as an exceptional one, with the battle against the Korshunov boss within the massive reactor complex being especially noteworthy.
1. The Last Wish
Red Forest/Cooling Towers
Moving forward, you’ll encounter “The Last Wish,” a level where you’ll join forces to launch an extensive attack on the Monolithian base. This is arguably one of the most arduous and grandiose tasks within the whole game.
Initially, you’ll encounter a challenging ethical predicament: should you choose to eliminate Dr. Kaymanov, an action that could significantly impact the course of the narrative.
The excellence of this journey lies in the sense that all your abilities and equipment have culminated for this critical point. It’s worth noting that Richter will be part of the initial attack, adding an enjoyable twist since he might be the sole reliable ally you encounter within The Zone.
Step by step, you’ll need to battle through each floor, ultimately reaching the rooftop for breathtaking vistas that are among the finest in the entire game.
