As a long-time fan of quality television, I have to say that this list is absolutely spot on! From the gripping suspense of Silo to the clever twists and turns of Inside No. 9, these shows truly embody the best of modern storytelling. And let’s not forget about EastEnders, which continues to be the talk of the nation – if you haven’t been watching, you might as well be living in a Silo yourself!

For five consecutive days, our diligent editorial crew meticulously selected top-tier programs to present an exceptional array of televised brilliance that should not be missed.

On the 28th of December, let’s embark on the next phase, covering items 30 to 21. This part encompasses a mix of grand historical narratives and quirky collections, brimming with unexpected delights.

I can’t wait to see what unfolds next as we get ever closer to the big finale, where we’ll unveil the outstanding performance that has stolen the show this year!

30. Blue Lights

Available on BBC iPlayer

In the gripping first season of this exceptional police drama, we learned that survival isn’t guaranteed for all, so it’s prudent to assume the safety position prior to starting the second. A year later, a wave of crime fueled by drugs has resurfaced, escalating tension not only among the ranks but also on the bustling streets of Belfast.

In the challenging scenario that lies ahead, it is once again our acquaintances from last year, comprising key figures Stevie and Grace (played by Martin McCann and Siân Brooke), who find their professional bond to be put under strain. – Paraphrased by AI Assistant

29. Boarders

Available on BBC iPlayer

If you wrote this BBC Three series off as something purely for teenagers, how unfortunate it is that you missed out on one of the true comedic gems of the year. Following five Black students from their lives in London to the upper-class world of boarding school, all kinds of adventures, scandals and microaggressions await Jaheim, Toby, Leah, Femi and Omar. They’re instantly made to feel like outsiders due to the colour of their skin and while Boarders tackles big themes head on, it effortlessly retains its vibrant comedy throughout with witty scripts and truly magnetic characters.

Boarders, a show set in a school, offers a wealth of relatable moments that will have viewers of all ages chuckling. In fact, this is one of the rare comedies this year that has made me genuinely laugh out loud. The series created by Daniel Lawrence Taylor not only reflects what occurs when television gives voice to underrepresented stories, but it also underscores the wisdom of betting on five rising stars to headline a BBC series, a decision that has proven to be an unquestionable success. – Morgan Cormack, Drama Writer

28. Shrinking

Available on Apple TV+

scarcely have I encountered a series that authentically depicts the impact of grief on a collective, particularly with the unique comedic touch that Shrinking boasts. (as a devoted cinema enthusiast)

In season 2, under the guidance of Jason Segel, Jimmy found himself coping with life again, but this time with the arrival of the man who had taken his wife’s life. Brett Goldstein, famously known for his role in Ted Lasso, delivered a compelling portrayal of Louis as he grappled with the fallout from Tia’s death, shedding light on that fateful, troubling night.

In the second season, it’s not just the main characters taking center stage. My personal favorite duo, Liz and Derek, are grappling with relationship issues. Meanwhile, Paul’s health seems to be deteriorating, and Brian and Charlie embark on a heartwarming journey to find a child. Each 30-minute episode beautifully weaves these threads together, making it an engaging watch for every movie buff like me.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement when I share that the anticipation and positive buzz surrounding the show “Shrinking” on Apple TV+ has led to an early renewal for a third season – all before the second season has even hit our screens.

27. 3 Body Problem

Available on Netflix

Despite seeming impossible, DB Weiss and David Benioff remarkably adapted The Three-Body Problem for Netflix, coming incredibly close to perfection. They stayed true to Liu Cixin’s novel, skillfully creating a high-quality sci-fi series that captures the emotion, peril, excitement, and mystery it offers in abundance.

They seemed to embrace the most outrageous scenes from the book, which left one wondering how these scenes could possibly be translated to the big screen. Benedict Wong even shared that some of these parts appeared “impossible to film”.

Louise Griffin, our Science Fiction and Fantasy Editor, notes that despite the series not becoming a major cultural phenomenon, it was significant to witness Netflix taking such a daring step. If you haven’t already, now might be the perfect moment to jump in and experience the chaos of “Three-Body Problem” before season 2 premieres.

26. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light

Available on BBC iPlayer

2015’s captivating Wolf Hall left many eager for more, specifically an adaptation of Dame Hilary Mantel’s final book in the Cromwell trilogy, The Mirror and the Light. In 2024, our prayers were answered. The team behind the scenes, along with a large portion of the original cast, returned to bring us this spellbinding continuation. Mark Rylance, an Academy Award-winner, once again embodies Thomas Cromwell, navigating a delicate and unsettling relationship with his master, Henry VIII, portrayed by Damian Lewis in a chilling display of the monarch’s unpredictable nature.

In a somber, poignant, and haunting manner, I found myself deeply immersed in “The Mirror and the Light,” even after it surpassed the sensational moments of Anne Boleyn’s marriage and execution. Much like its protagonist, this series seems unable to leave the past behind; instead, it is permeated by ghostly echoes that resonate with regret and remorse throughout its entirety, culminating in a heart-wrenching finale. Unlike King Henry, who considers everyone disposable, this series is far from it – it stands as a testament to exceptional historical drama and captivating performances. Lewis Knight, Trends Editor

25. Agatha All Along

Available on Disney Plus

It’s understandable if you approach Agatha All Along with a bit of skepticism, given it’s a spin-off released nearly four years after its original series and considering the signs of decline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, despite these expectations, Jac Schaeffer’s return to Marvel has proven remarkably successful, capturing an essence that no other MCU series has managed since her own WandaVision.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to see Kathryn Hahn take on the role of the wicked Agatha Harkness, gathering a coven of fellow enchantresses. Together, they embark on a mystical journey, one that holds the secret to rekindling their magical powers. Throughout this journey, they encounter various perilous trials, but hidden amidst these challenges are intriguing clues and enigmas that culminate brilliantly in the final three episodes. This carefully crafted follow-up was definitely worth the wait!

In a different role, Joe Locke demonstrates that he’s not just limited to Heartstopper’s Charlie Spring character, showing a distinctively unique energy, including hints of real darkness that are effectively used. Meanwhile, Patti LuPone, Aubrey Plaza, and Sasheer Zamata all have their shining moments, but Hahn consistently delivers from the very first scene without ever missing a beat.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but acknowledge the dual essence of her talent that plays a pivotal role in enriching the narrative. Her quick-witted humor and powerful dramatic skills are both indispensable in deepening our understanding of the title character, while never losing sight of her unique identity – David Craig, Senior Drama Writer.

24. The Perfect Couple

Available on Netflix

Without a doubt, Netflix’s show “The Perfect Couple” would win any award for Best Opening Credits. Each episode begins with a lively flashmob on a beach, set to one of Meghan Trainor’s catchy tunes – I find myself rewatching it every week! From the very first scene, it’s evident that “The Perfect Couple” is a delightful and enjoyable series to watch.

Showcasing over-the-top, dramatic acts from its extensive ensemble of famous actors, The Perfect Couple is a wonderfully tacky, occasionally humorous, and undeniably lighthearted mystery series. It delivers an enjoyable conclusion, making it a must-watch for fans of whodunit tales. The series is adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, and in essence, revolves around the aftermath of a lavish wedding that is disrupted by an unexpected murder.

As a dedicated viewer, I can’t help but sing praises for the engaging six-episode whodunnit mystery, “The Perfect Couple.” For me, it’s the captivating performances that make this series a delightful watch. Particularly impressive are Nicole Kidman as the enigmatic Greer, Eve Hewson as the unexpected bride Amelia, and Dakota Fanning as the cryptic sister-in-law Abby. This show may not appeal to the more elitist viewers, but for those seeking a contemporary, murder-laced adventure without the tedious aspects, “The Perfect Couple” is an excellent choice for a binge-watching session.

23. EastEnders

Available on BBC iPlayer

2023 has been another amazing year in Walford, with EastEnders consistently thriving and escalating its intensity. Ever since The Six mercilessly killed Keanu Taylor a year ago, the show has kept us on our toes without slowing down, and as avid fans, we can’t help but be exhilarated by this rollercoaster ride!

Additionally, we’ve reintroduced several familiar faces from the past such as Chrissie Watts, Ruby Allen, Mickey Miller, and the iconic David Wicks. The return of David has led to this year’s most impactful soap episode, where Cindy Beale, a well-known camp figure, confessed that when she’s with Junior, she’s thinking about his father George – a revelation that is likely to cause her trouble on Christmas Day and will undoubtedly be remembered in soap history.

Helen Daly, Associate Editor, suggests it’s fair to conclude that EastEnders has gained significant attention nationwide. If one hasn’t been tuning in, the question arises: where have they been watching instead?

22. Silo

Available on Apple TV+

One year following the gripping season 1 finale, Apple’s post-apocalyptic series Silo resumed for its thought-provoking second season. The plot thickened with an intelligent and intricate narrative that delved deeper into the enigmas surrounding Silo and its governance, while introducing a myriad of fresh questions to ponder.

The story resumes from where the previous season ended, as Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson), having escaped one silo, finds herself in another, encountering its sole resident Solo (Steve Zahn). Simultaneously, back at home, people have seen Juliette’s miraculous act and doubts are arising. Bernard (Tim Robbins) is now faced with the challenge of preventing a rebellion, and he quickly focuses on Mechanical as his target.

Molly Moss, Trends Writer, suggests that dividing the show into two primary plotlines may potentially decrease Juliette’s on-screen presence, yet it offers a greater spotlight on intriguing secondary characters like Camille (Alexandria Riley), Sim’s wife, and the enigmatic newcomer Solo. This shift could add depth and complexity to the overall narrative.

21. Inside No.9

Available on BBC iPlayer

Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton have consistently impressed us with Inside No. 9 by crafting unique stories for each 30-minute episode, usually set in a single location and featuring unexpected twists. Over ten years, they’ve produced this format an impressive 55 times, and more often than not, they hit it out of the park.

Suitably, this ninth and concluding season wraps up impressively, mirroring the show’s evolving mood with tales such as “Boo to a Goose,” a chilling thriller, “CTRL, ALT, ESC,” a tribute to horror, “Mulberry Close,” a suburban mystery, and “Plodding On,” a humorous exploration of meta-narratives.

In the spotlight once more are the brilliant minds behind the scenes, showcasing standout characters such as Shearsmith’s peculiar escape room manager and Pemberton’s captivating drag queen performer. Additionally, Mark Bonnar, Susan Wokoma, Natalie Dormer, and Dorothy Atkinson are set to deliver unforgettable guest appearances.

Everything leads up to an enchanting conclusion, filled with Easter eggs and nods for dedicated fans, honoring a series that’s richly deserved such self-congratulatory moments. The abundance of familiar faces in the heartfelt farewell speaks volumes about both Inside No. 9 and its makers, who are now aiming for the West End stage with Stage/Fright. – David Craig, Senior Drama Writer
