I couldn’t help but be captivated by this year’s television lineup – it was like a feast for the eyes and mind! One show that truly stood out to me, given my background as a former rocker, was “The Sympathizer.” As someone who’s spent countless hours in the studio, I can appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating a series with such visual flair and unique storytelling.
In these modern times, I find myself continually captivated by the ever-evolving realm of television. Streaming giants are consistently unveiling blockbusters, each one vying for supremacy in the entertainment sphere, while established broadcasters are relentlessly pushing boundaries to remain competitive. It’s an exhilarating period where creativity and innovation reign supreme!
2024 saw this competition serve up a memorable banquet of narratives, continually challenging the limits of television’s capabilities.
Beginning on Thursday, December 26th, we’ll unveil the initial ten selections, showcasing a variety of content ranging from quirky sitcoms to reboots of ’90s popular entertainment shows.
I’ll be sure to drop by every day to catch the full countdown sequence, culminating in the grand reveal of the top-ranked series that shaped 2024 like no other!
50. Disclaimer
Available on Apple TV+
In a more engaging and straightforward manner: This captivating psychological thriller delves into disturbing the seemingly flawless lives, with a particular focus on Catherine Ravenscroft (played by Cate Blanchett), a renowned TV documentarian known for uncovering wrongdoings. However, she finds herself as the central character in a book that exposes her own hidden secrets.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it this way: I, David Brown, Deputy Previews Editor, find myself reflecting on a film where Kevin Kline portrays a former teacher seeking retribution against Catherine, whom he believes is responsible for his misfortunes. However, one can’t help but question whether he’s aimed at the right person in his vendetta. The narrative delves deeply into the powerful themes of guilt and public humiliation.
49. Things You Should Have Done
Available on BBC iPlayer
Although it may not reach the pinnacle of comedic brilliance as shows like This Country and People Just Do Nothing from BBC Three, Things You Should Have Done stands out as a rarity among today’s television programming – a full-blown comedy, and a genuinely funny one at that.
Exploring the life of Lucia Keskin’s character, Chi (with a C), after the loss of her parents, this show incorporates an unconventional humor that may not appeal to all viewers. However, for those who appreciate Keskin’s comedic flair, which has garnered her a large following on social media, the series is essentially more of the same – but with the added production value of a BBC budget.
Endorsing Keskin boasts an impressive roster of talent, featuring Selin Hizli from Am I Being Unreasonable? and Jamie Bisping from Rivals. This ensemble cast generates a tumultuous environment that suits its main character perfectly. Among the standout episodes is one set within a care home (kudos to writer Nathan Foad), but each installment delivers side-splitting humor, making it an entertaining experience. Here’s to more of those moments in the upcoming season 2. – George White, Assistant Editor
48. Only Murders in the Building
Available on Disney Plus
After four episodes, fans of “Only Murders in the Building” can anticipate the same polished blend of comedy and mystery, showcasing witty banter from its main cast, a suspenseful plot that skillfully juggles humor and intrigue, and a roster of prominent Hollywood stars eagerly participating in guest roles. It would be a shame if Zach Galifianakis’ appearance in the Arconia was his last (it might even warrant an investigation on a true-crime podcast).
This season, the producers of the show introduced a deeper emotional resonance by selecting a murder victim who shared an incredibly moving connection with Steve Martin’s character, Charles-Haden Savage. Consequently, this led to some of the most heartrending scenes ever seen in the series, and the narrative took unexpected twists, such as the shocking ending of episode 1 and the daring use of found-footage style in one episode, demonstrating that the Only Murders team still has a lot of creative energy left. – Christian Tobin, Production Editor
47. Fantasmas
Available on Sky
If you found this year’s TV shows a tad dull and unimaginative, you might have overlooked Julio Torres’s offbeat comedy series Fantasmas. Set in a lively and surreal landscape that occasionally veers towards dystopia, it follows Julio’s unusual journey to retrieve an oyster earring he barely possessed before losing, which could potentially validate his existence if found. Along the way, it weaves stories about discontented Christmas elves, ambitious goldfish in the workforce, and infidelity among puppets.
Enhancing the absurdity even further are the high-profile guest stars scattered throughout, each appearing in bizarre standalone skits. Notable names include Emma Stone, Paul Dano, and Steve Buscemi. Interestingly, Buscemi portrays Q, an anarchic punk rocker who feels out of place amidst all the mainstream characters, yet is seen as a pioneer by X and Z. The analogy should now be clear.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for Fantasmas, a show that’s innovative, welcoming, and surprisingly sweet. It’s heartening to see production companies supporting unique ideas that stir up the small screen. Here’s hoping that Torres’s real-life HBO pitch meetings were less surreal than his fictional counterpart’s unusual encounters! – Christian Tobin, Production Editor
46. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Available on Prime Video
In a fresh and engaging manner, let me rephrase that statement: The second season of “The Rings of Power” served as a tale of redemption, not only for some of its characters but also for the series itself. Initially, season 1 struggled to captivate viewers, but season 2 significantly stepped up its game and notably enhanced its narrative structure.
Though some storylines lingered too long, like Númenor’s tale that seems less crucial (who really keeps tabs?), it was simple to overlook this when the subplots featuring Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and undeniably Lord Sauron (Charlie Vickers) were so gripping. And let’s not forget Adar, the exceptional character in the series, who not only pulled off a recast but surprisingly became the soul of the storyline.
remarkably impressive performances along with an authentic tale that hooks you in, plus plenty of exciting action, have breathed new life into The Rings of Power, overcoming fan apathy – and the stage is now poised for a splendid season 3.
45. Gladiators
Available on BBC iPlayer
The BBC’s revival of Gladiators could have easily fallen flat – after all, it wasn’t the first attempt to recapture the charm of the ’90s original – but instead offered a powerful blast of nostalgia, without shame in preserving what made the original so beloved by fans.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must say that this reboot captured the pulse-racing tension and colossal personalities reminiscent of the iconic series that ruled Saturday nights on TV. Just like its predecessor, it was all about the casting, with Legend emerging as an undeniable standout. His mix of charisma, bravado, and spot-on comedic timing often left us in awe, stealing every scene he graced.
The fresh Gladiators have demonstrated that certain elements, such as their captivating energy and dedication to preserving the brand’s original spirit, are timeless; instead of fading away, they seem to grow even stronger over time.
44. The Responder
Available on BBC iPlayer
Martin Freeman continues to deliver a genuinely convincing Liverpudlian accent throughout the second season of this gritty police drama, which stands out for its high level of realism compared to many others. Interestingly, Freeman’s character Chris Carson doesn’t spend much time on police work. Instead, he finds himself embroiled with Liverpool’s most dangerous criminals (including a chilling portrayal by Adam Nagaitis). He also struggles to maintain his family and takes care of a pair of small-time thieves who somehow ended up under his guardianship.
Jack Seale, the writer, notes that despite being a fundamentally kind-hearted yet unlucky and imperfect protagonist, Freeman masterfully portrays the full spectrum of human emotion in Tony Schumacher’s challenging yet compassionate screenplays.
43. We Are Lady Parts
Available on Channel 4
This year, We Are Lady Parts confidently overcame any concerns about the ‘second album issue’, showcasing their exceptional talent. Starring Anjana Vasan and an outstanding supporting cast, this sitcom’s titular rock band faced challenges like Gen-Z rivals, record label complications, and a less than successful photo shoot. All while persistently striving for musical success.
Christian Tobin, Production Editor, praises Nida Manzoor’s show by saying that the scripts are well-written and the songs are exceptional. However, what truly distinguishes it from other shows is the intense, dynamic feel it conveys. Similar to a lively band performance, the show is captivatingly engaging with vibrant visual effects and clever, fashionable jokes sprinkled throughout. There’s no news about a third season yet, so Channel 4, we hope you’ll give us an encore!
42. The Sympathizer
Available on Sky
Remarkably, this black comedy-drama didn’t make much impact despite being created by renowned director Park Chan-Wook and starring Robert Downey Jr in multiple roles, following his Oscar win for Oppenheimer. However, those who did catch it found it a truly impressive television production, ranking among the strongest new dramas that emerged this year.
In this show, Hoa Xuande played the role of a Captain, who was secretly a North Vietnamese spy embedded within the South Vietnamese military. Towards the end of the Vietnam War, he escaped to America without abandoning his commitment to the Communist cause. The series, directed by Park, boasted stunning visuals that were unique for its time in 2024, and the overall mood was unlike anything else you could have encountered. Furthermore, the acting was top-notch.
James Hibbs, a drama writer, notes that this production successfully delved beneath the surface of an era frequently portrayed from an American perspective on-screen, offering both enlightenment and entertainment. Furthermore, fans of Downey Jr will find his performance captivating, as it showcases some exceptional acting that is truly a spectacle to witness.
41. Sweetpea
Available on Sky
In a unique blend of dark humor and underestimated brilliance, Sweetpea stood out as one of the year‘s unexpected television gems in the comedy-thriller genre. The central character, Rhiannon Lewis, portrayed by Ella Purnell, demonstrates her remarkable versatility yet again. Rhiannon is a kind, socially awkward young woman who often goes unnoticed, finding herself at a particularly low point in life following the tragic passing of her father.
Choosing to assertively challenge individuals who mistreat her through bullying, overworking, and neglect, Rhiannon ultimately resorts to drastic actions – she begins taking lives. Her anger, though understandable, is undeniably extreme. Yet, her large, mournful eyes, heart-wrenching past, and genuine sincerity make her surprisingly endearing and worthy of support.
Chezelle Bingham, Sub Editor, describes the series “Sweetpea” as a captivating, humorous six-episode gem that’s simultaneously violent and soothing to watch. It masterfully combines comedy and crime elements, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating its second season due to its jaw-dropping cliffhanger finale. This show might make you reconsider your casual endearments towards an underappreciated colleague.
