The challenge lies in the strategic planning – you aim for a diverse selection of spells, but also need to acquire or purchase grimoires, decide on using a wand, and ponder your magical specialty. These considerations collectively shape the kind of Wizard you will develop.
From my perspective as an enthusiast, the initial decision is straightforward: Minor Missiles should be your first skill banked. Neither the Fighter nor Ranger’s starting skills seem beneficial in your situation.
Next, Armored Essence becomes indispensable if you opt for lighter armor (which is more efficient for a wizard regarding stamina and essence). However, if you prefer heavier armor for additional protection, it could deviate from the typical wizard build. This choice might affect your secondary loadout and provide a health boost, which would be unusual for a Wizard.

Afterward, the focus shifts towards enhancing your spells. At level 15, you will select one from four options: Secrets of Rime, Scion of Flame, Heart of the Storm, or Spirit of Decay. Each of these specializations amplifies your Ice, Fire, Shock, and Poison damage respectively. They can be upgraded three times each. While it’s possible to unlock multiple or even all four, keep in mind that doing so will limit the points available for skills that enhance these boosts. Hence, we advise choosing one or two specializations and constructing your spells around those.
Ice and Fire spells are more common, making them the sensible choice.
When considering your objectives, focus on spells that align with your long-term goals. For instance, the spell “Fan of Flames” is beneficial early on due to its extensive area impact and persistent damage, while “Corrosive Siphon” serves as a healing option. Remember to invest in Grimoire Mastery to access subsequent spells and find their respective Grimoires. Alternatively, you might prefer using a wand for generic magic attacks, but remember it won’t drain essence. If so, be sure to upgrade Wand Mastery and consider the power attack “Blast not Bounce.
Harvesting Essence is a fundamental ability since it utilizes your inherent power. However, Blood Magic can be perilous due to the potential loss of your health, which might already be low as a Wizard. In terms of general magic spells, it’s advisable to steer clear of Blackbow as you’ll already have ranged options available. On the other hand, Spirit Lance is definitely worth investing in. Missile Salvo can be an excellent upgrade from Minor Missiles, but this depends on how frequently you employ it. Furthermore, spells such as Blizzard or Meteor Shower are worth acquiring even without specialization due to their ability to control the battlefield effectively.

If you’re primarily playing as a Wizard but prefer to carry a large, two-handed weapon as your secondary loadout, then Fighter skills become incredibly useful. However, if you’re stacking magic with Grimpoire and Wand, or leaning towards a Ranger-style weapon like guns, bows, short swords, daggers, or spears, then you’ll mostly need the basic Fighter abilities to complement your playstyle.
Here are the fundamentals: Perpetual Resilience and Robustness, both at Level 1. They aid in restoring your health and enhancing your overall health, making them indispensable on the battlefield. If you’re not wielding a two-handed weapon, the only other skills to consider are Crippling Criticals and Rugged Construction. The former amplifies your critical hits (particularly beneficial for Wand Wizards), and the latter grants a minor health boost for destroying crates and similar objects.
If you’re opting for a two-handed weapon as your secondary loadout, boosting your strength or Brawn will significantly enhance its performance. For attacks with greataxes and greatswords, Bleeding Cuts is highly beneficial to maximize their effectiveness. However, if you prefer hammers or maces, consider switching to Stunning Blows instead, although these are less common, so Bleeding Cuts is typically more advantageous. Retribution, which returns a portion of the damage taken, can be useful once your Wizard abilities are mastered, as can Clear Out, creating a sword tornado around you. However, neither of these skills are essential in most cases.

There are certain abilities you should acquire regardless, and others that become useful only when you choose Ranger weapons for your secondary equipment setup.
The two essential skills you should prioritize are: Survivalist (Level 1) and Evasive (Level 1). The Scavenger skill enhances the healing properties of food, making it a good choice for one point. On the other hand, the Evasive skill reduces the stamina drain when dodging, which is crucial since stamina is also required for wands and any equipment associated with your Ranger or Fighter character class, thus it’s an important skill to have.
To summarize, your choice will depend on your secondary weapon. If you have a shield, opt for Parry. For bows or guns, select Steady Aim. With daggers, swords, or spears, choose Piercing Thrusts. When using one-handed weapons, go for Finesse. If you’re particularly fond of bows or guns, choose Marksmanship instead.
Because daggers, swords, and spears are single-handed weapons (excluding two-handed greatswords), you’ll find both Piercing Thrusts and Finesse skills useful. If you prefer not to invest heavily in enhancing your secondary equipment, we recommend prioritizing the Finesse skill for a more balanced character setup.
While some are centered around this concept, they’re not all. For instance, at Level 15, Bear Ally summons a bear during combat, making it an excellent high damage choice for causing chaos in skirmishes. Critical Strike could be beneficial for Wand users, as it complements Devastating Criticals from Fighter skills nicely. If you’re fond of upgrading and crafting, Scavenger might appeal to you, but it’s not an essential skill when Wizards can upgrade spells using skill points instead of creating tools.
At Level 20, neither of the Level 20 skills should be a top concern since you’ll be focusing on developing your Wizard build.
