The widely acclaimed “Empyrean” series is branching out into a new format, as Ten Speed Graphic, Piatkus, and Entangled Publishing have jointly announced plans to produce graphic novel adaptations of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling fantasy epic. These publishing houses will adapt the initial three books in the series – “Fourth Wing”, “Iron Flame”, and “Onyx Storm”. This expansive addition to the “Empyrean” universe follows the series’ success on bestseller lists, with Yarros herself overseeing the adaptation process to ensure that the graphic novels faithfully represent her original work. The adaptation will split each novel into two graphic volumes, offering a detailed visual journey through the dragon-filled world that has enthralled readers globally.
Yarros expressed immense enthusiasm in the official declaration, expressing his eagerness to collaborate with the extraordinary Ten Speed team on this project. The unique charm of witnessing one’s own words transformed into art is not lost on him, and he considers himself fortunate to have such an opportunity in this medium. He can hardly contain his anticipation to roll up his sleeves and join forces with the gifted artists and editors to produce a completely unique reading experience that could captivate new audiences, by preserving the essence of the original story while tailoring it for visual representation.
Liz Pelletier, our CEO and Publisher at Entangled Publishing, expressed great excitement about working with Ten Speed and Rebecca on this venture. The chance to explore visual storytelling is simply amazing! We’re eager for Empyrean fans to rekindle their affection for the series and for new readers to be introduced to Violet, Xaden, and their dragons for the first time. This partnership underscores our shared objective of broadening the fan base.
Kaitlin Ketchum, Editorial Director of Ten Speed Graphic, is thrilled about our partnership with Rebecca and Entangled to generate graphic interpretations. These visual representations are sure to delight the dedicated Empyrean fanbase, staying faithful to the source material, visually captivating, and enhancing the reading experience uniquely through graphic storytelling,” Kaitlin shared about the deal she negotiated and will oversee in editing the books.
Rebekah West, Editorial Director at Piatkus, expressed immense joy about partnering with Ten Speed, Entangled, and Rebecca Yarros on this remarkable project. She mentioned that they’re thrilled to transform the Empyrean series into an exceptional new format, offering fans and new readers a fresh perspective of Rebecca’s enchanting universe. What Is the Empyrean Series About?
In the magical realm of the Empyrean series, readers embark on a journey to a land where aspiring warriors learn to tame dragons at the prestigious Basgiath War College. The narrative revolves around Violet Sorrengail, a fragile twenty-year-old with aspirations of becoming a scribe, much like her deceased father. However, her peaceful life is disrupted when her military mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, compels her to enroll in the perilous dragon rider training program against her will.
At Basgiath Academy, cadets are required to establish a strong connection with a dragon or risk meeting an untimely end. The training process is just as dangerous, involving fierce competition among the trainees in hazardous challenges. Violet, unfortunately, encounters harsh treatment because of her mother’s military background and past actions during a rebellion. However, Violet’s extraordinary ability to bond with two dragons simultaneously – a massive black dragon named Tairn and a smaller golden dragon called Andarna – grants her exceptional powers and thrusts her into the center of intricate political maneuvers that stretch beyond the academy boundaries. As she cultivates her powers and unveils long-hidden truths about her realm, Violet must navigate intricate relationships, including a forbidden affection for Xaden Riorson, a strong wingleader whose father was executed by Violet’s mother.
This franchise kicked off in May 2023 with “Fourth Wing,” which soon turned into a publishing phenomenon. Its success was sustained with “Iron Flame” in November 2023, and more recently with “Onyx Storm” in January 2025. The series seamlessly blends aspects of fantasy, military fiction, romance, and academy settings to offer readers an engrossing experience that has struck a chord with diverse audiences.
The Empyrean books have experienced tremendous commercial triumph, leading charts and transforming into a genuine cultural sensation. Fourth Wing, in particular, held the number one position on The New York Times bestseller list for an extended 18-week period and was one of the most frequently borrowed titles in American libraries. A significant portion of this success can be credited to the series’ popularity on social media sites, notably TikTok, where readers passionately discuss their responses and speculations about the books.
The graphic novel transformation is part of broader growth initiatives for the franchise. In the fall of 2023, Amazon MGM Studios secured television rights for the Empyrean series, with Yarros and Pelletier serving as executive producers. In 2022, the TV adaptation welcomed Moira Walley-Beckett, a writer from Breaking Bad, who took on the role of showrunner.
Specific release dates haven’t been announced for the Empyrean graphic novels.
